Bottling Station for Counter Pressure Filler

I wanted a good way to fill bottles from the keg. Last year I tried to fill some using the BMBF and it didn't work very well for me (lost a lot of beer to foam). I looked at the Blichmann beer gun, but decided that if I was going to spend the money, I might as well transfer under pressure and...

CO2 valve gizmo for carboy to carboy/keg transfer

I built this gizmo and used it yesterday to transfer a beer from primary to a secondary carboy for dry hopping and it worked perfectly: This is primarily intended to transfer using a siphon from a carboy to another carboy, or from a carboy to a keg. It should also work to transfer using...

The Night Before Christmas (Texas version)

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through LA CASA, Not a creature was stirring. I wondered, "QUE PASA?" I was hanging the stockings with MUCHO CUIDADO, In hopes that old Santa would feel OBLIGADO, To bring all the children, both BUENOS Y MALOS, A nice batch of DULCES and other...

    State Fair of Texas

Had a great day at the fair yesterday - didn't stay as long this year as usual, but it was a really nice day. Recommendations: the Chinese acrobats of Cirque Shanghai - they do some unbelievable stuff, the Killdares (Celtic rock group) as always worth hearing, the flag lowering ceremony by the...

    Question about lager fermentation

Sorry for the long post, but I figure if I'm going to ask for help, I should give as much detail as I can. I'm fermenting my first lager now. This was one of those $20 anniversary kits from AHS, so I bought the extract kit with grains even though I normally do all grain - figured it'd be a...

    Starter question - sudden flocculation

I put a 2 liter starter of WLP002 (English Ale yeast) on the stir plater 24 hours ago. I last looked at it about 3 hours ago and it looked like every other starter I've done before (never used this WLP002 before, though) - a uniform creamy tan/yellow color. I just now looked at it and now it...

CO2 for those who don't keg

I just got back from the MicroCenter computer store and saw something there that I thought might be of interest to those who don't keg and don't have a large CO2 bottle, but would like a little CO2 for filling the carboy or bottling bucket headspace after racking to protect against oxygenation...

The Night Before Christmas - Texas version

Someone recently posted a beer related version of "The Night Before Christmas", which reminded me of this one (not beer related). This appeared in the Dallas Morning News back in the 80's. 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through LA CASA, Not a creature was stirring. I...

Plots of my water profile for the last 45 months

I hope this data will be of interest to some. The following charts are data from my local water supplier (North Texas Municipal Water District). This data is for the last four years (almost), from January, 2007 through September of this year. The missing data point in the middle of the graphs...

    Old sayings and their origins

I'll start this off with one I'm sure you've all heard: "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey." The story I heard about the origin of this (I'm not sure it's true, but it makes a good story) is that it is an old sailing expression. You've all seen the movies about the old sailing...

Texas State Fair - fried beer, etc. - a first-hand report

Went to the fair today - great fun! The only downers were the raised prices on almost everything - parking now $15, beer 9 coupons ($4.50) most places, and the biggest disappointment was the fried beer. What a rip-off! $5 for 5 little ravioli things with just a little squirt of beer in them...

How do YOU pronounce vorlauf ?

This came up on another thread, but was O.T., so I thought I'd post it here. I think everybody pronounces kräusen (hope I spelled that right) as KROY zen which I think is correct German pronunciation, but I have heard some people pronounce vorlauf as VOR loff (and various other permutations)...
