    Fruit Flies

I was going to keg a batch of my Spring Ale this morning and there was 4 or 5 dead fruit flies in the air lock. It was filled with vodka and I didn't notice them until I dumped the vodka into the mason jar that I store it in (I reuse it)...ruining the vodka that was already in there. Anyway when...

    Starter or not?

I am going to brew a wit using 4.5 lbs 2 row and 4.5 lbs flaked wheat for the fermentables (expected OG ~1.044) and for yeast White Labs WLP400. I have never used liquid yeast, so I am going back and forth as to weather I need to use a starter. On the yeast vial and their website they say it's...

    Iodine testing...

I went to wal-mart today to get some iodine to test conversion with and they didn't have any. The pharmacist told me they didn't sell it any more because of meth dummies or some such crap. So I got something that is basically a generic betadine solution. When I tested I didn't see purple...I...

    noob questions

I have several two quart jars full of apple juice that my maw-in-law made for my wife to make jelly with. Well, we have enough jelly for several years and I want to make hard cider with the juice. It is still pretty and hasn’t turned dark, but there is a Lot of pulp in the bottom of the jars...

    Glue Manifold?

I made a cpvc manifold for my 5 gal cooler and the first time I used it I didn't glue it together. It worked out just fine, but I was real nervous everytime I stirred the mash. I am planning to use it again today and I am thinking about gluing it first. Do ya'll just use regular pvc glue and...

    Easy All Grain?

Wouldn't this method be ok to do an all grain brew? I don't see what the difference would be by using a cooler with slotted or drilled pipe, except it might be easier to control temps with a cooler...is that all? Am I missing something?

    Newby Questions

I have several batches of ale under my belt, but no cider. What we have on hand is several half gallon mason jars of apple juice that my ML (maw-in-law) gave us. What she did was peel and core the fresh apples and made apple sauce with the meat. Then boiled the peels and canned the juice...

    Bottling high FG

I transfered a batch of Liberty Cream Ale to carboy after it had been in primary 8 days and the FG was 14 at about 74 degrees. Which gives an actual of about 16. Sheet says it should finish at 10-12. OG was 40. After some discussion we decided it was due to the Munton's yeast and I figured ok...

    I screwed up

I haven't seen this one before...even in Revvy's best of screw ups thread...maybe I did, but just don't remember... I brewed to perfection, transferred into primary and then filled the air lock half full of sanitizer (last time I just used water...wish I did this time) and Then pushed it into...

    More on Muntons

I ordered a recipe kit and it came with Muntons and now I have read all kinds of bad things on here about Muntons. I ordered some other yeast, but it won’t be here until early next week and I really wanted to brew Saturday night. I don’t have a local supply store so I was thinking...
