    Storing Starsan in keg

Lots of elbow grease usually makes for a good beer.

    Storing Starsan in keg

No reason to store kegs with StarSan in them. Just clean them, let them air dry, and store upside-down. When you're ready to keg, give them a good rinse and then sanitize with StarSan. There's a potential for etching or pitting problems with stainless steel. This topic was discused in an earlier...

    Honey burns?

I do the exact same thing. After adding the hot wort to the LME container I cool it in the fridge for 5 minutes, then dump it in with my yeast starter. It really gets the starter kick started again. I get my stuff from MoreBeer; great containers, none of that canned crap. Great for spam, though.

    Honey burns?

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was thinking. Thanks.

    Honey burns?

I'm brewing tonight and for the first time I'm using 1.5# of honey. Does honey have the potential to burn on the bottom of the kettle like LME? The recipe calls for the honey to be added 45 minutes into the boil. Do I need to take it off the heat when adding the honey or is it somehow different...

    question about straining while brewing

Use a grain bag and a super fine, nylon mesh hop bag. It really keeps the trub down.

I'm brewing now, need advice on dry hopping technique

I finished about an hour ago. I decided to just use new hops. I steamed my hop bag first this time, only because I also added an oz of French oak chips. I usually just spray a little StarSan on the bag a few minutes before I add hops and chuck it in the secondary. My first time with the oak...

I'm brewing now, need advice on dry hopping technique

That's kinda what I've been thinking. Do you think I'll do any harm by trying this method? I always like to try new things, but I surley don't want to screw a batch up by unknowingly doing anything stupid

I'm brewing now, need advice on dry hopping technique

I'm brewing an IPA now (call it IPA 2). It's an extract brew, steeping grains now, 5:10pm EDT. I plan to pitch this batch on the yeast cake of different IPA (let's call it IPA 1) that I'll be moving to secondary in an hour or so. I'm going to dry hop IPA 1 with some Kent Goldings pellets...

    Hops filter?

That's it! Does it add aroma only? What affect does it have on flavor. Do you use it with a beer that's already been dry hopped? Do I need to bring my own beer mug to your picnic?

    Hops filter?

Has anyone tasted beer that flowed from the keg, through a home water filter that has been stuffed with whole leaf hops, then out the faucet? I'm not sure what it's called. I've seen a few photos and once saw a short clip on TV, but never in person. What is this type system called? Does it...

How many kegs do you guys own?

I own eight, 5-gallon cornies. I have a six-cornie capacity, bottom-freezer kegerator with a 20# external C02 tank. When I fill them all, I'll probably buy another four. It's so hard to build up a large cache, because we keep drinking the damned stuff.

    Yeast Starter Question

As long as you're getting airlock action, RDWHAHB. If you have a transparent starter vessel and can see tiny C02 bubbles rising, that you're not getting any krausen isn't that important at this point, the yeast is alive and multiplying. Don't chuck it and buy new yeast. You'll still get a...

    Brewing on stovetop

If you're planning to do 5 gallon batches, consider getting a larger kettle. A 26 qt pot with 20 qts of water, then add a bunch of LME, DME, candy sugar, hops, or whatever, it doesn't leave much room.

    Homegrown Hops

Free hops, excellent. Be sure to do some research about exactly when and how to harvest. I think there's a fairly short window of time to harvest them at their peak. Let us know how it turns out for you. Hops are closely related to cannabis. So, I guess the the old saying still rings true...

    Homegrown Hops

The main road though the Connecticut town I live in is called "Hopmeadow Street". And there's the U of Vermont studies on growing hop in New England. http://www.uvm.edu/~pass/perry/hops.html I know it's do-able, I'm just looking for advice from someone who's actually doing it.

    Homegrown Hops

Does anyone grow their own hops in New England? If so, what varieties have you grown? What success and failure are you getting? Lower alpha, mold problems, etc.?

    What's brewing this weekend 8/4 - 8/6?

Racking a hopped up imperial IPA to secondary on Sunday (dry hopping with 2 ozs of Kent Goldings). And brewing a new recipe for me, "Columbus on the Horizon IPA" that will go on top of the English ale yeast cake from the imperial IPA. Should be a volcanic ferment!

can i use the kitchen sink for sanitizing?

While some on the forum seem to think it's okay, IMO . . . Oh, um, dude . . . that's truly friggin' disgusting. May as well fill the toilet bowl with idophor to clean your equipment. Why not just sanitize a couple of turds while your at it, you can use them to cork your bottles instead of...
