3 weeks later, still at 1.020. Ok to bottle?

Brewed an Oatmeal stout about a month ago with a OG of 1.064. Past few weeks I've measured it and it has been stuck at 1.020. It fermented at 63*F using WLP001 Cali ale yeast. Previously when I had done this brew, it went down to 1.015 and 1.013 on 2 separate brews. I moved the fermenter to a...

Longer fermentation or time in bottles for aging

So I brewed a smokey scotch ale back in may. I let it sit in the primary fermenter for 2 months and then moved it to a secondary (mainly because I needed the primary and I hate primary fermenting in carboys) for another month. I just bottled it recently. What are your ideas as far as properly...

    Thread question for faucets

I am looking at this faucet to replace my standard faucets that stick when not used for a day or two (I know, GASP!). Do they use the same threads as the standard faucets that come on towers or are they something different? Thanks! Want to put this faucet...

    Christmas Red questions (brewer unreachable)

So I wanted another brew to add to my "Christmas Collection" and wanted to branch away from the heavy spiced ales and came across this one in the Xmas ale thread. I've tried to contact the brewer on it but he appears to have gone idle :( Here is what he wrote: 10lb 2-Row 4lb Munich 80z...

Need to mellow out harsh alcohol

So 3 weeks ago I brewed my spiced Christmas ale which I want to be able to start drinking beginning of December. I made it a little bigger because I wanted a touch of alcohol warmth. Based on numbers I got and what beer smith spits out, the ABV is 7%. It is also rather heavily spiced with...

    Yeast starter still good?

Last week I had an unprecedented two days off so I thought I'd bite off more than I could chew and try brewing 3 beers. Made three starters. When it became evident on the second day I would not make it to the third day, I put the starter in the fridge. It's now 7 days since I initially...

No rice hauls for wheat beer

I am brewing a small batch of my summer ale (in hops of keeping things warm!) and my LHBS is out of rice hauls. I am using 4lbs wheat malt and 3lbs 2 row. Do I have to worry about stuck sparging? Previously I would add 1lb of rice hauls per advice from Palmer.

    Fresh Ginger/cinnamon equivalents

I am working on my Christmas ale and my recipe last year used 1 tsp of cinnamon and 1/2 tsp of ginger. Both were dry powder. If I wanted to use Cinnamon Sticks and chopped up ginger root... how much of each would be the best? Thanks.

    Cleaning beer/yeast gunk

So I had to use a blow off tube for a strong fermentation and now the tube I used has a nice thick layer of beer/yeast gunk in it. I have no real way to get in and clean it and soaking it in water really hasn't helped. Also this is my first time fermenting in a carboy - usually I used Ale...

    Uncrushed grains left outside

So I have a collection of uncrushed grains that I left outside in sealed containers (within another sealed container) but it still was exposed to some extreme temperatures. 95 degrees on a few days. They have been out there for a few weeks. Are they still any good to use? Thinking of brewing...

    Airlock seal broke

So I was pulling the airlock out of the lid to my fermenter for storage and the little black seal that the airlock fits into (that is in the lid of the fermenter) broke in two. Are these replaceable or do I have to buy a new lid? Can they be gotten at hardware stores?

Restarting old yeast in stuck fermentation

So I brewed a summer rye ale following this recipe https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f70/summer-ryepa-160096/ Although further down you can see I screwed up all the calculations and ended up with a OG of 1.081 instead of 1.050. I didnt expect to screw up so I didn't make a starter. So I just...

    This starter still good?

So on monday I made a starter for a beer I wanted to brew wednesday. However, work required me to come in and ultimately I was unable to brew so I stuck the starter in the fridge. Now I want to brew sunday, almost a week after the starter was made - but it was in the fridge after it finished. Is...

    Which one is this?

You are never too experienced to post in the "beginners" area. I only have about 10 under my belt but think I am dealing with my first "infection." The first indication was a very strong sulfur smell in addition to solid masses floating at the top of the yeast 2 weeks after pitching. I pitched...

Something that could sit for ~60 days

So I am visiting my brother and brought some of my beer brewing equipment with. We want to brew a beer but the next time I'll be back is in 2 months. So we are looking to brew something that a nice long while in the primary would turn out good. His basement is right around 62 degrees and...

    Adapter for turkey fryer

I have come across a turkey fryer and propane tank which finally will allow me to do full 5 gallon boils. I've been partial mashing for a while. Anyways, the input to the regulator for the turkey fryer has a threaded attachment and the tank has what looks like a ball valve attachment...

    Which keg disconnect where?

So I finished my last beer in my keg and due to time, didn't have time to brew another one so it's been a while since I've kegged anything. On the keg, for the in/out, there are 2 disconnects (the things that unscrew where the ball locks connect to) and I know one is for input and one for...

    LHBS had only leaf hops

So I am brewing a batch that I was going to use 1 oz of a bittering hops for 60 minutes. They only had leaf hops and not pellet. I've never used leaf hops before. Normally I put my hops in a hop bag, toss them in and away we go. Anything I should do differently for leaf hops? Still use a bag...

    2 Recipe critiques

I have 2 empty fermenters which should be a crime punishable by being forced fed Bud Light. I also have a little bit of free time this weekend and would like to brew some beers. First is an Irish Red. I've spent some time in the books studying up and reading other recipes and think I may have...

    Marris Otter extract sub

I generally do either partial mash or extract with specialty grains. My previous partial mashes used american 2Row for the base malt and I boosted it with a few pounds of light LME to hit the gravities I needed. However, what is the sub for Marris Otter? light LME or amber? I am looking to brew...
