    Guess who's back! (maybe?)

If some of you remember me, I'm back :D Before the backstory and reason for the post, I basically ended up brewing an all grain batch with my nephew as he had brewed with me in the past and loved it. This re-bit me and I've got the brewing bug again! Now to why I stopped: I ended up moving...

    Beermance a video series

Hey all, longtime HBT member, lifetime member in fact, that is starting up a video series called Beermance on youtube to discuss the basics of beer. I think most here probably don't need the videos, but some of the newer brewers might like them. Mostly, I respect the opinions here and want...

Is this the stupidest article you've ever read? Discuss.

http://www.mentalfloss.com/difference/lager-vs-ale/ The difference between ales and lagers contains such facts as: Lager yeast can be reused, ale yeast cannot. Ales taste nutty, lagers do not. Brilliant! :I Morons

    Phil's Tripel

Here's my recently brewed Tripel... very tasty stuff... What do you all think of the color? The belgian yeast really has a strong showing here, spicy, fruity, everything I ever wanted :) I've yet to post a pic of my concoctions so I thought I'd finally do so. This was an AG batch, If I...

    American IPA Wondermous American IPA

Below is my own american IPA recipe taken from similar ones, but using CTZ and simcoe hops, wow what a yummy IPA this makes... You may want to up the grain bill a bit, I set for 80% efficiency due to my setup working near there every time, if you get less, adjust accordingly. I've done this...

Good news and Bad news ;(

I was kegging two beers last nite, one that I'd left to bulk age a bit longer due to some weird off flavors, and my dubbel. The dubbel tastes wonderful, that's the good news, I didn't keg the pale ale, it smelled of mold when I first opened the carboy top, and tasted 5x worse than it did when I...

Man I love my HERMS :)

I just did a SMaSH, 8 lbs Maris Otter, 2 oz of Liberty... hit 87% eff... on a batch sparge. Not bad eh. I can't wait to see what it will taste like, I've never used Liberty before, and my LHBS recommended it because they've not had it in stock for a LONG time. So we'll see how it turns out...

    Help w/ a cyser

Okay, so I wasn't looking at recipes, and made myself two 1 gallon batches this weekend, one is just a mead w/ some oranges in it for flavor (and cloves and cinnamon) and I put in some white labs sweat mead yeast and wyeast yeast nutrient in it and the cyser, the orange mead is kicking off and...

Big question... Stick w/ ales, or add lagers to my brewing?

I've been reading up on lagers a lot.... I am getting an idea of what is involved... and from what I can tell, theres a decent amount more work involved to get the right steps in place, d-rest or not, etc. and longer to ferment. I'm trying to think of ANY lager/pilsner etc that I've drunk that...

Really long fermentation for an ale?

Hey, I've pitched two different yeasts in double batch I did 3 weeks ago. I was able to keg and even drink the one I pitched Nottingham in. Its cleared out well, and tastes awesome. The other I pitched a washed/reused Wyeast American Ale I took from a previous batch, and its still cloudy and...

Geeks learn to control yeasties ;)

Slashdot | Designing DNA Circuits To Brew Tastier Beer That is pretty freaking cool. DNA level tweaking of yeast to get preferred flavors etc... if I understood this right haha I for one welcome our genetically modified yeast overlords!

    Leftover wort

I'll tell you I need to dial in my quantities better, on my new HERMS, I'm using a spreadsheet to calculate my volumes and it seems way off, I had about a gallon left over from my last batch and the eff was 80% still! This was second runnings and it was like 1.030. The second batch I did on my...

No secondary may have burned me

I have heard everyone talk about no secondary. I've always done one, and finally decided I'd try no secondary. I left my Belgian Wit in primary for 3 weeks. I transferred to my keg and WHEW it stunk... its got a horribly strong yeasty flavor I've never had on any other brew except one and...

My Electric HERMS build w/ Brewtroller in charge

Here's photos of my HERMS build I've mostly completed. Still have to stitch up a few things here and there, but all in all its mostly done. I have to paint the stand still, clean up the electronics a bit, etc, but I ran it w/ water today to make sure it can do what its supposed to, and its...

    Brewtroller built!

I've got my own brewtroller controller built, now I need to finish the HERMS setup around it. Here are the pics: The temperature sensors are already hooked up and working like a charm, I have a heating element, and a march pump, I hope to have this thing working by the weekend so I...
