Looks like they list "extract" of the malt at 79% which corresponds to ~1.036 ppg. So you can adjust the value under Gravity of the malt and that should give you a more accurate estimate for your specific malt. The values that come stock preloaded with BrewR are for convenience only. They...

The numbers you got from the app look correct: OG 1.104 / FG 1.026. Like I said though I don't believe 75% efficiency is realistic with such a big beer. Try 65% instead and you will see a more reasonable 1.090/1.023. To prove that the app is not lying you can enter your numbers at...

Can you post the entire recipe? Specifically, the ingredients affecting the OG: all the malts/grains/sugars. Make sure that the gravity value of each ingredient matches that of the actual ingredient specified in the recipe. Also, in practice efficiency of 75% for big recipes like this one is...

Have you looked at batch size / boil volume values? Do they correctly reflect what you are making? Also make sure you have the correct recipe type selected. E.g. Extract if you are making an extract kit.

Brewing Classic Styles Irish Red Recipe

What I think is that the recipes in the book are conversions to extract from AG. Most likely Jamil created/refined the recipes as AG originally and then when the book was being written or edited he came to realization that for it to be more popular it needed to be extract-oriented for the...

Never been so discouraged about homebrew (need some encouragement)

Are you pitching enough yeast and oxygenate well? Try a small 1.040 OG, 1 gallon batch. With the same water. Stressed yeast throws off a ton of phenolic off-flavors.

    beer tastes like star san

I hear you OP. I've also been brewing for just over 3 years with variable (often crappy) results, until recently. I changed a lot of different things: all grain, water, boil intensity / length, mash ph, sanitizer brands etc without much success. At the same time I assumed that since my lag time...

    What ale should I make?

How about Pacman? Sexy enough for you? They are all very similar, neutral and clean at that temp.

    What ale should I make?

Just use Nottingham or US05 yeast and make any ale you like. They ferment just fine at 60 degrees. It is the preferred temp, actually, if you want a clean profile with no esters.

    1 Gallon recipes

To compensate for lower efficiency I found it was more close if I divided the grain amounts by 4 instead of 5. But it depends on your equipment and process. If you plan on doing extract, mash efficiency is a non issue. Use a beer software like QBrew to help you with figuring out IBUs and...

    Black Hop Monster

+1 on making a starter. Even for small beers one vial of yeast is not enough. 5 gallons of 1.080 needs a rather big starter: 4 liters if you are not going to aerate it continuously or use a stirplate. Check for yourself at mrmalty.com.

Those 3 hops are all great for a citrusy APA. They may be a bit harsh for bittering though. Add them late for flavour/aroma, and use a small amount to bitter if you don't have other hops. 0.25 @ 60 0.25 @ 10 or 15 0.5 @ 5 0.5 @ 0 This is my typical hop schedule for a 2 g batch of my house APA...

What's your favorite/"go-to" Pale Ale grain bill?

47% 2-Row 35% Vienna 12% Wheat 6% Crystal 20 I mash at 151-152*F and target OG of 1.048-1.050. Bitter to 40-45 IBUs and use a lot of late C-hops and dry hops.

    Brew Apps for Android

Glad it's working well for you. The timer doesn't have to stay in the foreground -- you can navigate away to other screens of the app or to other apps. You can come back quickly through the notification in the expanded notification bar. It will remind you of the ongoing timer and also show the...

    Simcoed Up

I would not call 1.062 a session beer, but maybe it's just me... Are you already stocked up on Simcoe? They've been a bit hard to find. Depending on the alpha acid %, the 60 minute addition may give you different results. I'd recommend dry hopping it with an ounce or two, to balance out the...
