What do you use to weigh down dry hop/fruit bags?

I just went into my shop and cut 2" long pieces of 1" SS round bar. I could combat the nay Sayers by saying marbles are made of recycled glass. Carbide might be an answer as in it has much higher weight to mass ratio.

Dry hopping - Primary vs keg

I can't comment one one vs the other. I have been using the stainless steel canisters in the keg. At first I did 5 gal batches and transferred from fermenter to keg with hops inside. Worked great. But I found I wanted to brew less and be more efficient, so I went to 10 gal batches. I didn't want...

    What is your House beer?

I may have adjusted the recipes a bit but here is the clones so to speak. Fresh Squished never without this one on tap then I alternate between these two every other brew day. Pliney the Elder Bell's Two Hearted

    Barley Growers?

Without even looking at a Preen label I would say no way. Barley is not a broad leaf vegetable but instead it is a grass. Willing to bet preen has some control over grass even though it is a per-emergant. Beings your 3-6" high now is about the time to spray if you plan to use any contact type...

    Barley Growers?

I have grown barley and wheat for nearly 40 years among many other crops. Weed control could be a debatable subject. The issue above is everyone run to the Glyphosate idea. Why? It (Roundup) and Monsanto is plastered everywhere. IMO just drop those words and lets seek chemicals or methods...

    Coffee Bean Grinder

I second Capresso. Not that I knew it was one of the better grinders out there, but I have had one for years and it still chugs along ginding 18 cups worth of beans every day. Matter of fact all the white lettering on the top has worn off and it is covered with oil from coffee beans.

    Dry hop

1/2" SS pipe coupler. But I find the bag will still float to the top after a day when more then an once or two is used. Ran into issues with dumping them in because I closed transfer by gravity into the keg. The ball lock gets plugged up.

    Bottle Label Removal

I had some tough labels to remove. Plus the glue even on those that slipped off easy with just water. A tub with warm water and Alkaline Brew Wash with a few hour soak work fantastic.

Winter Brewing using propane - warm ideas

I guess I should not be here to reply......I moved my cart into the house. Last week I first did a 5 gallon batch BIAB and boiled it on the stove. While it was boiling I Mashed a 10 gallon batch. The 10 gallon batch was boiled on the propane burner mounted in the stand that was place in center...

    Mash PH, and Bicarbonate

The calculator was perfect, at least a good idea where I will be. Thanks

    Mash PH, and Bicarbonate

I finally feel comfortable with BIAB and narrowed down a few recipes that will be my normal rotation, All IPA types. So with that I am ready to move onto the next stage playing with the water. I sent in samples to Ward labs from private well. Everything except Bicarbonate is reasonable and...

    Hop Spiders

I been using one of the 6x14 inch spiders. Really not perfect or needs to be 6-8 x18 for a 20 gallon pot and 10g batch. Not that the hops will not fit, but the spider don't sit down in the pot far enough or needs to be made adjustable. I guess as a fabricator with shop it would be just a matter...

A bunch of questions about kegging...

I have been aging a large beer for 4 months now in a keg. I just keep 10lb of pressure inside. Fill the keg with starsan and then transfer out using CO2 to purge of O2. I have spicket on the bottom of my carboys. I gravity feed out of carboy into keg. One line for beer and other line for the...

    Are dented kegs okay?

While the OP's dent is large, I took a brass hammer and sort of was able to get a few dents looking better out of two of mine. The dents were further up the side and much easier to deal with. I really didn't care for $25 each.

    Ever Dumped a Brew? Regrets?

I did a clone barley wine 6 moths ago. It was fantastic out of the keg while conditioning. I added the dry hops even though it was a few week early. I , to this doy do not know what has happened. The great taste has gone south. I have 2.5 gal kegged in refrigerator and it became drinkable but I...

Best means to soak off bottle labels?

Thanks for the advice. I found we have a partial box in the laundry room. My wife and daughters get together once in a while and make laundy soap from washing soda and fels-naptha soap.

Best means to soak off bottle labels?

I started out soaking in PBW. Worked ok to great on some labels. But it usually took some time. I had some bottles that the label was resistant to PBW. I threw them in some Alkaline Brewery Wash and they came off in a few minutes. So for now for all my washing needs I have switched to the...

    What's Floating in my Wort?

My guess is it is the proteins but always like second opinions. Maybe something from the hops? Brewed my first all grain beer. I noticed a lot of , well hard to explain but oils floating or mixed in the wort. It is heavier then the water and once in the carboy it settles out. 20 hours in, the...

    Conditioning/Aging

I brewed up a Stout. It has been in a keg, dry hopped, chilled, carbonated, and on tap for a week. Not one of those beers I will consume very fast so yesterday I bottled up a case to keep for the future and make room for another keg that will be more sessionable. When it comes to aging or...

    Accidentally ordered grain uncrushed

I just graduated from extract kits to buying grains needed to match those found in the extract kits. I did buy a mill but it was a few days behind my grains and I wanted to brew. I think it was 1.5 lbs for seeping. I used a big heavy zip lock bag and the roller pin. Crystal type barley seems to...
