Shelf life of yeast energizer, nutrient, etc..

I bought all the necessary items to try to make Skeeter Pee probably over a year ago, and want to make another batch now... just wondering if these items are still good to use (stored in container/bags they came in), or if I need to buy a new supply? Yeast energizer Yeast nutried Wine...

    Skeeter Pee

Mine looks nothing like this - only when I whip it does it have that much foam.. it is bubbling pretty strong, and went from 1.067 --> 1.059 from this past Sunday to today. I didn't use a yeast slurry, just pitched a starter of some EC-1118. Also, it is very fizzy.. is this normal?

    Skeeter Pee

Should I be whipping my must every day even if there is strong fermentation? Or only if it slows down?

    Skeeter Pee

I only let mine sit for an hour or two before pitching my yeast starter... I made it around noon on Sunday, and when I got home from work tonight the airlock was bubbling about once per minute.. seems slow but at least it was doing something. Question for those who have made it - I just took...

Easy Stove-Top Pasteurizing - With Pics

I read in a recipe thread that woodchuck is 1.026 so that is what I was basing it on.. Do you normally stop at 1.010? Ill give this a try and see how I like it. can you test the gravity of a carbonated drink or do the bubbles skew the reading? Im just wondering what this sparkling cider...

Easy Stove-Top Pasteurizing - With Pics

So what is the way to get a semi-sweet sparkling cider using heat pasteurization? If I ferment from 1.051-->1.010 and add 1oz priming sugar, my gravity will be 1.013 according to your calculation (3 gravity points), correct? Seems pretty dry to me. I just tested a semi-sweet sparkling...

Skeeter Pee instructions using dry yeast?

does anyone have a brief writeup on making skeeter pee using a dry yeast instead of a slurry? I know its not as easy, but if anyone can share their method that worked id appreciate it. What type of dry yeast? When to add the lemon juice?

Newell's Groundhog Cider (woodchuck amber clone)

Question on this recipe: If I want to make this and bottle carb it, can I do the following? After primary fermentation, rack to bottling bucket with the concentrate and bottle. Wait until desired carbonation, and heat pasteurize to kill the yeast (instead of the potassium sorbate step)...

    Bubbling in air lock?

I recently made my first ever hard cider, and for the first week or so I saw steady bubbles in the airlock + in the liquid. But, I took a look today for the first time since then (end of week two now) and it seems like all the bubbling has stopped. Nothing in the airlock, just small patches of...

    Confused - few questions

This is my first time brewing anything, so it is new to me. For cider, are you supposed to stir the yeast around when you add it in? I just put it in and let it float around.

    Confused - few questions

Normal looking for the first day? Looks weird with just a thin ring of foam, but maybe it is normal? [/IMG]

    Confused - few questions

I ended up going with the Raspberry Apple Cider for my first try, just because I am not sure if I'll like the dryness of Ed's recipe - but I will try it out in a smaller batch soon. One problem though - I added the 1/2 lb. of lactose with everything else by accident, when it was supposed to...

    Confused - few questions

One last question before I attempt this tomorrow: How important are the temperatures listed in the recipes? I am planning on putting the carboys in my basement while the cider ferments, but I don't know how to get the temperature in the room to the exact temperature it says. Not to mention...

Thanks for the quick response. Can twist-cap beer bottles be recapped? I see conflicting opinions all over the net.
