    Thick mash vs. thin mash?

I've gone to a thin mash (2qt/lb) and had better efficiency. I can't tell a difference, but I brew mostly thinner styles anyway.

    Barley Crusher, which size?

I have the smaller one and no problems. I crush all my grain by hand and it still just takes a minute or two to get a whole batch ready. Pouring more grain in half way through is totally fine with me.

    Johnson Controls thermostat issue

As others have said, analog or digital? Analog one works fine for me, never more than 5f swings. Is your fridge empty? If you fill it up the temperature swings will be much more gradual and not as much of a problem.

    Kegerator Done!

Congrats on finishing it up. You're making me feel sad about my picnic taps :P.

    Palisade Pale Ale (MO/Palisade SMaSH)

Never used palisade but the hop schedule looks just fine. Nice aroma/flavor without too much bittering.

    First batch ever!

PLEASE check the thread date before you post.

OK, so who wants to be my first?

I logged in to post "centennial blonde" but looking at your sig you're all stocked up there. Definitely brew something that you're going to like a lot of. If it were me I'd brew one of the "staple" pale ales or light hybrids from this site, never had any trouble getting rid of any of them. A...

    Slight off flavor

I hear the simcoe - cat pee thing a lot, but I've never really noticed it. Time won't hurt! As others have said time mellows all hop harshness.

What handheld device do you use?

I use a piece of crap phone. Work pays for it and I can't imagine paying what they want for a decent data plan. I'm at my PC or laptop enough that I have no use for anything else, mobile broadband is nice :) .

    whats up with AHB

We've gotten a lot of posts like this lately. Forrest says they've had a huge increase in order volume lately, also they're running a big sale right now. Hopefully things pick back up again soon, as they're a good vendor.

anybody play WOW? (world of warcraft)

Enjoyed it, but played it way too much. Played from Open Beta to Arena Season 2. 3 (nearly 4) 70s, did HWL twice... raided every week night, the whole bit. It was a lot of fun, but when your friends quit it gets old fast. Looking back I spent too much time playing, but time we enjoy wasting...

BobbyM or FlyGuy: You Vs Palmer Sparge Water Temp

I'll vouch for the hot sparging as well. Improved my efficiency with no noticeable change in taste.

    Where to buy Extract kits

I like northern brewer and have never had a problem with them, but this is something I've noticed as well. Their recipes (especially the low/med gravity ales) seem to be formulated with cost as the primary objective. They keep their recipes very simple, which for some styles works great, but a...

    First batch if JOAM.

Good luck to you, it will turn out tasty! Mine turned out very sweet and syrupy, the bread yeast pooped out early. Next time I'm using less honey or a different yeast. Tasty but I have to water it down a bit to drink.

    Recipe advice...

I would do 180-185 as you planned, as do most people around here that batch sparge. You won't get any tannin issues and it helps your efficiency.

    Where to buy Extract kits

I like NB and AHS, but that's not really a concern. We can tell you, or it will say on the yeast what temperature to aim for. Buy on price or quality.

***Resolved- security issue with one of the shops we frequent

I didn't realize it had been so long, in that case they've wasted their chance to fix it IMO. You did a good thing by bringing it to their attention and if you were ignored then outing them is the next step. Plenty of sites let you see your order invoice with just an order number, any site...

"Students are not allowed to defend themselves when they are attacked"

Kudos to you for at least pushing back at the school. They design policies to be simple and easy, not necessarily right. Luckily their ability to punish stops at "go home for a week". I would have just let her come home for the week and do whatever she wanted. The fact that she knows she was...

    Centennial/Cascade- I gots lots!

Keep us posted, the simple grain bill intrigues me as I'll be coming into a large amount of these hops soon. Enjoy the brew :).

    Spent grain.

Thanks for that dog treat recipe! The pooch loves spent grains but I don't have a way to keep the soggy ones around long enough before they go stinky (and boy to they get stinky...). I used to feed em to our pig but she's gone now, so lately I've just been slopping them in the burn pile/barrel.
