Late extract addition in full boil

Does any of this affect the hop isomerization? If so, how much of a trade-off?

    Hop combination

Thanks. I just figured out that I can search within a forum topic. I found a bunch on Columbus SMaSH. I think that's the path I'm gonna take. I was leaning towards the Amarillo/cascade DH anyways. I appreciate y'alls feedback.

    Hop combination

I guess it would come down to how many IBUs I want in the beer, but would 8 ozs of Columbus be enough to do a SMaSH?

    Hop combination

I just brewed a 5 gallon batch of an extract IPA. My second batch. Hop schedule: 1 oz. Cascade @ 60 minutes 1.5 oz. Cascade & 1 oz. Amarillo at flameout. Sat for 30 minutes. I have an 8 oz. bag of Columbus hops a buddy sent to me. They are whole leaf. I was thinking of using the...

Beer tolerant materials - newbie help

I think one of the appendixes in the back of "How to Brew Beer" by John Palmer covers this.

Tips for bottling wands and air in the hose?

My spigot has an air release hole on it. Actually, I have two spigots and they both have it. It opens when the spigot valve is closed. I have to keep my finger over the hole so air isn't introduced. If you're opening and closing the spigot, I bet that's where you're getting your air. I'm...

    Fermentation of my first beer

UPDATE - I opened the fermenter up, took a sample for SG, added hops and closed it back up. I sprayed the lid with Starsan before closing. 10 days and I hit my FG target. I was gonna wait the full two weeks before dryhopping, but I figured a low alcohol beer (3.5-4%) didn't need that much...

    Fermentation of my first beer

It just so happens that I have one of those Bigmouth fermenters. It has a spigot, so I avoided it. I've been contemplating the whole fermenting in a bucket with a spigot thing. Seems like the easiest route, but yet a lot people in these forums advise against it. Leaking and all. But that...

    Fermentation of my first beer

I just had a thought. I pulled the airlock out to check the krausen situation. No krausen. I put the airlock back on. I've been relying on the positive pressure inside the fermenter to keep the oxygen out. I exhausted the pressure when I took the airlock off. At this stage of fermentation...

    Beer smell burns in nose

Lol. OP, I'm here because I did the same thing (my first brew).

    Fermentation of my first beer

I forgot to mention that I can press on the top and bubbles will still come out. (I tried pressing on the lid to make a tighter seal)

    Fermentation of my first beer

I've read plenty on here to know not to be concerned until I checked the SG. But it was odd to me that it started and stopped. I highly suspect the lid is the culprit. Do the lids fail often? Btw, thanks for the prompt response!

    Fermentation of my first beer

I finished up my first brew Saturday. It's a Brewers Best Grapefruit IPA. I pitched the dry yeast directly into the wort and stirred it in with a sanitized spoon. Against my better judgement. I asked two different guys at my LHBS and they both insisted that I follow the directions provided...
