    1 SSR 2 elements

    I'm running them off of 2 seperate 20 amp 120v circuits. Thanks I kind of thought it wouldn't be a problem to run them both off the same ssr but wasn't sure. Is there any reason to use 2 separate ssrs vs just one? Seems running just one 40 amp cuts back on cost and space needed for...

    1 SSR 2 elements

    I'm looking to automate my boil kettle with pid/ssr combo. Right now I have 2 1440 watt elements in there that I control off of switches(5 gallon batches). My understanding is that a 1440 watt element is going to pull about 12 amps each. So can I use one 40 amp ssr to fire off both elements...

    Hop/Grain substitutions

    Hey I'm just to the north of you. I haven't been down to check out the Northern Brewer in West Allis but I plan to soon. It's actually where I planned on picking up my 50lbs bags of grain. I get my specialty grains for my lhbs. I too brew around 20 batches a year I think I have to agree...

    Hop/Grain substitutions

    What is everyones opinions on making substitutions in a recipe. I've been buying bulk hops (like 6-8varieties) that allows me to pretty much sub those in to most any recipe that I come across but I'm starting to think maybe this isn't the best idea. Same thing with grain, I have been buying...

    Poll question: CFC or IC?

    Just built a 50ft 3/8" IC. Used it last night for the first time with a whilrpool. With 45 degree tap water I went from 212 to 62 for 5.25 gal in just under 10 mins. Night and day from my 30ft 1/4" chiller I had with no whirlpool. I was also leaning towards the CFC but after last night's...

    Favorite Christmas/ Winter Beers

    I agree one of the few beers I ended up dumping. Tried to get visitors to drink the rest of the six pack down over the course of six months. Needless to say no one ever wanted another, and most were dumped shortly after being opened.

    My first attempt at Dogfish Head 120 with pics!

    Are you going to give it oxygen over the first 36 hours, and are you going to add hops and sugar on the schedule during fermentation that they recommended on the TBN. You put some serious work in on this one.:rockin:

    Should I still use this yeast

    I'm kind of leaning the same way. I know that the jar was cleaned and sanitized so there should be no worry of infection. People pitch yeast from IPAs (strong odor) into other types of beers with no ill effects. Plus this is going into an extremely hoppy beer so I don't think any smell is...

    Should I still use this yeast

    About a month ago I harvested some yeast from a batch of wyeast 1056 that made a very nice beer so I wanted to repitch it and I know there was no infection. I plan on brewing in a couple days so today I opened up the jar that I had stored the yeast in, with a little beer on top (old pickle jar...

    Setting Chiller on top of element?

    I just completed building an electric set-up and was planning on just setting my IC on top of the element for the last 10 mins of the boil. This should be safe right? I'm shouldn't get shocked when I set this in because I'm thinking the element is just hot, right? And the heat shouldn't be...

    braided hoses

    Thanks guys for the responses. I think I'll use the stuff I have for now and when it wears out I'll look into getting some silicon hose. :mug:

    braided hoses

    I'm putting together a new brew system (similiar to the countertop brutus 10)and I have a march pump arriving on Thursday. :rockin: I have bought some 1/2" ID braided pvc hose to use to move water/wort around. I plan on doing a RIMS system and will be transferring strike and sparge water with...

    Heatstick = awesome!

    Thanks for the tip, I'll grab my meter and check it out.:mug:

    Heatstick = awesome!

    I'm rebuilding a couple of heat sticks that I have. Whenever I put them into water and plug them in they instantly pop the the gfci on the outlet. Does that mean they are just getting wet or does that mean that the elements are shot and need to be replaced also? (they are 1550 watt elements)...

    I don't get it.... I don't get it at all...

    I enjoy seasonal brews. I like to drink wheats, ipas and lighter malty beers in the summer because they are easy drinking and refreshing. I like heavier beers in the winter because they are warmers. Not that I won't drink one or the other during anytime of the year it's just a preference...

    Proper Pitch Rates on Washed Yeast

    After you guys wash your yeast and store it for a few months, the viability has dropped on it correct? I know there is still living cells in there because everyone seems to be able to get it going with starters again. My question is.. How do I know how much of that yeast slurry, that's been...

    how long does cracked grain last for

    I've used it up to a couple of months old. It was sealed in an air tight bucket though. Didn't seem to have any ill effects. But if your worried about it then just chuck it and get new.:mug:

    mixing s-05 and nottingham?

    Lagers don't use higher pitching rates to achieve a different flavor, it is because they are fermented at so much cooler temperatures that a higher pitch rate is needed for strong fermentation. Here is a quote from Palmer's How to Brew: Because of the cooler temperatures, the yeast is less...

    Carboy vs bucket

    Use you bucket. You won't have a problem as long as it's HDPE. Just leave it in there for the 2-3-4 weeks, whatever you're planning on for fermentation. I've left beers in buckets for over 4 weeks with no ill effects. :mug:

    What's the deal with Yeast Starters?

    For most beers that will work just fine. But if you are using liquid yeast or reusing slurry you "should" use the pitching rate calculator. Not to say that over pitching or under pitching won't work. You will still end up with beer, but you will end up with better beer if you pitch the right...
