    Infected batch

It was bound to happen eventually. After nearly a year of brewing, I got an infected batch. Today I found that one of the carboys from my recent batch of California Common had gotten an infection, as seen in the images below. I have a pretty good idea what caused this...

    My Schmidling MaltMill has arrived!

SWMBO bought me a new Schmidling MaltMill for Valentine's day and I finally got a chance to use it! I have great fondness for my UPS man, because whenever his truck arrives he's either carrying car parts or brewing stuff I can't tell what this is just based on the box, so as always I...

    Bombsight Brewstand build thread

This'll be a placeholder for a brewstand build I'm doing for a friend. My friend Walter, whose wife is manager of Maryland Homebrew asked me to weld up a stand for his brewery. Walter went ahead and drew up the design himself in Visio: http://bombsightbrewery.com/Brewery-Stand.vsd Yes...

    Military Peeps - Challenge Coins

I'm not interested in throwing around a challenge coin in a bar. Mine's too important. I do wonder, however, how much of a conversation starter my coin is. I presently have a coin from the Chairman of the Join Chiefs of Staff - two administrations ago.

Poll: Should I name my kid 'Otto'

I'm currently having a "spirited" discussion with my wife regarding potential names for our next child, which I hope will be a boy. I've chosen "Otto" as the name I'd like. My wife steadfastly disagrees. What say you? Reference and inspiration: Otto von Bismarck - Wikipedia, the free...

Someone didn't get the memo. (Long but worth it)

First, a shout out to all the LEO's out there. You guys are under-appreciated and underpaid. The memo: Don't break into Schneemann's house. I'm notoriously flakey. I forget things all the time. Forget things I did, forget what I said, forget important dates. Everything. Honestly, it makes...

What temperatures should I have used?

Yesterday was my first AG batch. Above & beyond the stupidity of trying such a task when I should have been getting real work done, I ran into an issue where the temperature of the mash didn't rise sufficiently (because the infusion temps were too low). Thankfully some helpful folks were in...

    Krazy Krausen

This is my first AG batch The batch was put into fermenter about 8pm last night and is currently showing signs of active (though not particularly vigorous) fermentation. This thing has a really crazy looking krausen on the top of it. I've come to the understanding that different yeasts do...

My idea for a geek drinking game

Gather together a bunch of friends, a bunch of booze, and a laptop computer connected to the intarwebs. Each person gets a turn During their turn, the person will GIS (with safe search off, dur) for any female's name. If one of the first five images returned contains nudity, the person takes a...

    Looking for Barleywine Recipe

SWMBO and I went to DuClaw this weekend and she had their barleywine and asked "why don't you make one of these?" So, does anyone have a good barleywine recipe they can post? TIA

To Wii or not to Wii, that is the question

The family is contemplating buying a Wii, but I'm not sure. Arguments Against: 1) I'm not into games. I was obsessed with my Atari 2600 when I was a kid, but around the time Nintendo came out, I got interested in other stuff. I played some Nintendo and Sega but I just plain SUCKED, so that...

Old TV shows - would you watch them today?

Websites like Hulu and Joost are now carrying full episodes of old TV shows like the Andy Griffith show and Bewitched. Personally, I think it is a great that these old shows are available for people to see. So here's the question: Would you still watch these shows if you could?

IC in wort during entire boil?

Here's the dilemma: I've finally finished converting my sankes to an HLT and keggle. Yesterday, I installed a Weld-B-Gone stem thermometer adapter into the keggle. I have a small dial thermometer with a long stem which goes nearly the full width of the keggle. Thus, the dilemma...

What to charge - sanke-to-keggle mods

Apologies if this is the wrong forum. Mods feel free to move. I have some people who would like some sankes modified into keggles. Above & beyond the obvious reimbursement for materials, what's a fair price for this?

For those of us who grew up in the 70s and early 80s

And have kids. Its hilarious to sometimes catch 70s actors doing kids shows. I remember when my first kid was born, how amazed I was to hear George Carlin doing narration on Thomas the Tank Engine. Today I'm watching TV with my girls and a show called Oswald comes on Nickelodeon...

Kegging Stouts - Nitrogen a requirement?

I keep reading about people using nitrogen, rather than CO2 for stouts. Can you use CO2? So far, my favorite homebrew is my Oatmeal Stout, and I've been bottle conditioning it. I'd like to move to kegging, but SWMBO will kill me if I have to double up on the kegging equipment just for stouts.

Double Batch Size = Double Ingredients?

I know this is probably a REALLY stupid n00b question and I should know better. But, I wanted to make sure: If I wanted to double a batch size of an extract recipe, I can just double the ingredients, right?
