    4500W Heat stick burning wort

Anyone having trouble with heat stick burning wort? My 1st run at it (2 batches, 2 boils at same time ) resulted in one being burned. I replaced both elements and made a few other adjustments. Then today one of the two smelled like it was burning so I switched to gas. Any help? Thanks.

    High FG

Forgive me if this thread is a bit redundant, but I can't seem to find the answers to my questions in many of the other similar threads on this subject. I have brewed a few high OGs lately and I'm not able to get down to the target 1.0teens I'm looking for or indicated by the recipe. I'm...

two CO2 tanks vs. one long air line?

I have two places in my house that I want to have CO2 - in my basement for carbonating and in the fridge and in my kitchen at the kegerator. The two obvious alternatives are to have two CO2 tanks, or to have one tank in the basement with a line running up to the kegerator in the kitchen. I am...

    band-aid flavor?

Anyone know why I am finding a band-aid flavor in my beer? The aroma and flavor are touched with this slightly nasty characteristic. It is like plastic, chemical flavor. I can tell it is ruining the great flavor underneath it. I have had this flavor in the past, but not recently. I...

    merky (stuck?) fermentation

Here is a new one for me: I brewed 10 gallons of a SN celebration a few weeks ago and fermentation has been happily bubbling along in two seperate 6 gal. HDPE buckets at 72-degrees. Fermentation appeared to stop last week sometime and I racked to secondary yesterday. Two slightly...

    guinard lambic book

It appears from looking at Amazon, ebay, and other online resources that the Lambic homebrew book by Guinard is out of print. Does anyone have a copy they could scan and email? I can't stomach paying $50+ for a used paperback. Thanks!

    electric water softeners?

I have hard water and currently bypass my softner for brewing. I am going to change from a conventional salt bag water softener to a clearwave electric water softener, which apparently alters the charge and adhesive properties of the calcium and magnesium ions, softening the water without...

    Oak Chips - anything special?

I am planning on beginning (I say beginning because it is an 18+ month process) Duchesse de Burgougne tomorrow. The recipe calls for Oak chips to be added to the aging vessel to simulate the oak barrel cask. I know they sell the chips at the LHS store, but I am curious if anyone has had luck...

    priming sugar substitutes

I frigged up and forgot to get priming sugar on my last trip to the homebrew shop. Have a cranberry rye ready to bottle in preparation for the holidays. Any ideas? Maple syrup? Honey? I am bottling 2 half gallon growlers and kegging the rest. If you have a suggestion, please note your...

    What is it about guinness.....

Does anyone know what it is about Murphy's and Guinness that allows nitrogen dispensing to create that waterfall effect? I have tried with other stouts and it seems like it just doesn't work as well. Anyone have a semi-scientific explanation for what Irish Stout recipes have over other...

    Nitrogen

I am thinking of exploring nitrogen dispensing for stouts or experimentation with other ales. I have the idea that I should robably blend co2 and nitro, but i'm not really sure how to do this. If you have experience in using notorgen, can you share your techniques and let me know what...

Hot Water Tank - any ideas?

I have built and been using a rubbermaid cooler reterofitted with a hot water heater element and I can't seem to stop water from leaking out of the bottom - can't seal the element to the bottom of the tank. I have made SS plates, caulked the crap out of it and then covered it with a food-grade...

    the efficiency troubleshooting continues....HELP!

Anyone have any ideas on how to increase mash efficiency? I can't seem to get higher than 60%, even when my process has the following going for it: - I can stabilize temp at whatever the recipe calls for - I have a low mash pH and a starch test indicates complete conversion - I...
