Removing Diode on V4 D1 Mini?

Lol. I'm with you. I just did a batch. I used some angle flush cutters and desoldered one end, then tore the diode off. Super easy, and much faster than trying to desolder both ends cleanly. But I guess you could potentially tear out a trace that way. Use your best judgement.

Removing Diode on V4 D1 Mini?

The D1 mini V4.0.0 may have removed the diode, but unfortunately it still conducts 5v to the VCC when plugged into USB. The issue with the d1 mini v3 was not the diode itself, that was just a simple way to break continuity from the USB, so it could only be powered by the battery...

iSpindel - Can't connect to Wifi AP

Sorry for necroposting - Ive been going down the rabbit hole for a bit chasing a highly unstable wifi connection. Maybe once every 5 to 10 hours it will successfully update ubidots. The iSpindel logging simply shows: ispindel "Failed to restore connection..." without much more useful info...

Feedback please: roasty rye IPA experiment!

I played it conservatively with my first rye PA and only used two pounds. For sure it needed another pound or two. At only 2 lbs, you can tell its there, but you cant really pinpoint what it is. At only one pound, you probably wont even detect its in there.

    All-grain on Stove Top

I can fit three 8 gallon kettles on my range top, and have no problems bringing them to a rolling boil. Lets me to three batches at a time in my kitchen. A beefy range hood is beneficial. I have no idea how people feel comfortable brewing outside with all that *nature* that can find its way...

Fifty pound sack = catastrophic mash failure. Ten Pound bag is fine.

Karps is OK. Really nice people, but it's a really small homebrew operation. The $20-25 shipping makes it less palatable, making it $75 bucks per sack, compared to morebeer's $54. Kedco will order sacks for 70 IIRC, but I have to pick them up. Its tough to justify a $20 dollar premium when...

Fifty pound sack = catastrophic mash failure. Ten Pound bag is fine.

And I would counter that my responses are phrased in kind. I must admit that I take particular issue with two types of responses which I've received in this thread: Firstly, claims that it was a brewing error, with zero evidence or even suppositions that support an error which would result...

    Sierra Nevada Pale Ale clone

Gave this a shot last month with the cluster, and while its hard to put my finger on the exact discrepency, its miles apart from SNPA. Ill have to try this again with the proper perle hops.

Fifty pound sack = catastrophic mash failure. Ten Pound bag is fine.

Perhaps theres some giant Homebrewing Mecca here that I've just missed all these years, but for the most part, we only have Karps and Kedco out here. Warehouse space / rent / taxes are just way too high to have a bunch of grain sitting around waiting to be sold, and its far worse in NYC. But...

Fifty pound sack = catastrophic mash failure. Ten Pound bag is fine.

It shipped to LI, NY, so its quite a bit of distance. Even after shipping, it was 10 to 20 dollars cheaper to buy from morebeer than either of my two local shops, neither of which actually stock bulk sacks, and would need to order them anyway. Unfortunately we dont have any true brew shops...

Fifty pound sack = catastrophic mash failure. Ten Pound bag is fine.

I'm saying that I *will* allow it to rest for 30 minutes *next time*, on the off chance that conversion is incomplete after the mash. I am pulling out all the stops to give this grain every possible advantage just to see what happens. But to clear things up, no, I dont batch sparge for 30...

Fifty pound sack = catastrophic mash failure. Ten Pound bag is fine.

Yeah, I probably will try this next time. Right now I've been heating the strike water in 5 gallon pots, but next time Ill heat the water in the 8 gallon kettles instead and mash a little thinner. I'll probably mash 90 minutes with a half hour batch sparge as well, to be sure I'm not shorting...

Fifty pound sack = catastrophic mash failure. Ten Pound bag is fine.

EDIT: I wasnt mashing at a higher temp. Looking through beersmith I wasn't mashing any thicker, and my recipes were all in the 163-164 strike temp range. It must have been a typo when responding. I probably accidentally referenced sparge temp instead of strike temp and it didnt seem odd to...

Fifty pound sack = catastrophic mash failure. Ten Pound bag is fine.

My strike water was 163.7, and I did not need to cool. The temp was right on ~152 as soon as I was done stirring. This past brewday used the same problem grain for all three batches. But the previous brewday from the initial post shows that only two of the three batches used the "problem...

Fifty pound sack = catastrophic mash failure. Ten Pound bag is fine.

I brewed another three batches this past weekend from a new fifty pound sack (same order and same lot number), and while the suggestions have certainly helped, my efficiency is still sub par. I am still convinced something is off with these bags. I tightened the plates as much as I could...

Grain vs. Extract cost at your LHBS

Ha! Youre right, it's just a hobby, despite how I try to spin it off as a cost savings measure to the wife. :) But I guess whether its an extra 4 hours of work or 4 hours of play depends on my mood. Ever try brewing completely sober? That lands solidly on the "work" end of the spectrum.:mug:

Grain vs. Extract cost at your LHBS

Yeah, LHBS commands quite the premium around here too. 60+ bucks a batch is just insanity. At lest full kits are usually closer to 45-50. Still 5 to 10 bucks over an online purchase. Going AG has dropped the majority of my brews into the 25-30 dollar range per 5gal batch. And it's even...

refractometer s hydrometer frist 10 gallon brew day

I was going to say, the numbers look like theyre going backwards if it were specific gravity. Either that, or you brewed some 1.250 SG beer. :)

    mcmaster carr shipping prices

Ive ben ordering from mcmaster carr for years and years thanks to my dozens of other hoppies in addition to brewing. Their shipping charges are always pretty decent. Unless I order something heavy or oversized, its usually about 5.50 shipped from NJ to long island. You could always call...

Fifty pound sack = catastrophic mash failure. Ten Pound bag is fine.

I never claimed that I was perfect or incapable of making a mistake. My process is chock full of half-assed shortcuts. However, what I can confidently claim is that the same mistakes were reproduced to a fairly high degree of accuracy across all three batches. I've brewed probably 150...
