    Whirly pop Roasting Advice

Thanks. I cant get the heat any lower. Next time, I am going to rig up something to raise the popper up a little higher. I'm pretty sure I am roasting too fast. There is no break in noise between 1st and 2nd crack, it sounds like a 2 minute 1st crack. I'm cranking the entire time, except to look...

    Whirly pop Roasting Advice

New roaster here with only about 2 pounds experience. I realize times vary by type of roaster, bean, etc. But what should I target for first crack time and total roast time on a Whirly pop for Full City Roast? My roasts are even, and coming out at about Vienna or slightly darker, with first...

    Need some advice...Pump/Kettle

Most pumps that we use are not self priming, so IMO, I would work on the kettle side. You can drill a hole in the kettle with a step bit. I haven't, but there are threads on here on how to do it. With success on the first hole, you can then add additional holes for thermometer, whirlpool, etc...

Predicted pH is different between Brunwater and other Spreadsheets

Thank you all for the very helpful info. I ended up using 3.6mL of lactic acid, but since I do not have a pH meter, I will have to wait a few weeks to see how it tastes. I have the supporters version of Brunwater, but also cross check with Mash Made Easy. This is the first time in 20+ batches...

Predicted pH is different between Brunwater and other Spreadsheets

Thanks for your reply. Yes agreed. I also used Brewers Friend, along with your spreadsheet and Palmers. They all came up with around the same amounts. ~3.6mL seems about right, and 1.9mL seems low. Unfortunately I do not have a pH meter to check.

Predicted pH is different between Brunwater and other Spreadsheets

Hello, I am getting different predicted Mash pH amounts using Brunwater, EZWater, and Mash Made Easy. I am wondering if I am entering data incorrect or something else. To get to a 5.4pH using Lactic Acid, Brunwater recommends adding 1.5mL to the mash water + .4mL sparge water. Both EZWater...

Water question using Brunwater with Partial Boil (Not partial mash)

Hello, I will be brewing an English Northern Brown Ale, a New Castle clone recipe from @BierMuncher. I will be doing an all grain partial boil (not partial mash no LME) method where I will no sparge mash, and after boil, top up with 3.25 gallons water for 5 gallons of wort into the fermenter. I...

Thinking about brewing while at work?

All the time, and I work from home which makes it tough to actually work sometimes. Love reading the newest forum threads, but I wish they were an rss feed/auto scrolling so I wouldn't have to refresh 1000 times a day.

How to give away your brew

Laws vary by state and sometimes by city when it comes to homebrew, and sometimes there is a gray area that can be open for interpretation as well. I have heard that even just transporting homebrew can be tricky in some states. In Minnesota, you can give away homebrew. I give it to churches...

    Initial pressurization of kegs

Taking a keg off gas for a day or 2 or longer wont hurt at all. You should have enough psi in there to serve a few beers while the other keg carbs up.

    Defective Corny Keg Cap?

Sometimes those things are a real pita. There shouldn't be a difference in type, as long as the lid post is making good contact with the keg. Did you try keg lube? Sometimes keg lube and 20+ psi will seal it, then you can back down to serving pressure. Folded up cardboard, a dime, can also help.

    Oxygenating starters?

I'm no scientist, but here is how I understand it. When using a stir plate, air (oxygen and whatever other molecules) is being pulled into starter. Yeast produce CO2 which has to escape some how, so it must be flowing thru the same holes as the air coming in. If you oxygenate with a tank you...
