Is your mash just crystal malt, or is there a base malt (2-row, Pilsner, etc.) in it as well?

Grounded Brewing Technologies - 240V eBIAB System

This system seems to accomplish just about everything that I have been looking at lately to plan how I want to move forward. I did BIAB with 3.5 gallon batches, then moved to 5-10 gallon batches with a cooler and keggle. I miss my BIAB days as clean-up was far quicker/easier and I would think...

Brausupply Unibrau Pro and Brewha BIAC Pump Cleanup

Hopefully a simple question on brew day procedure: How are the accessories (pump, hoses, chiller, etc.) that are not necessary for fermentation effectively cleaned following brew day? I don’t imagine these are left attached to the conical and can only think that they are completely...

    Stop Worrying About Your Weight

Calm down, nobody is requiring anybody to change anything, ha. Some of the complaints in the above comments were directly called out in the blog, so I’m not sure some of y’all actually read it or not. Maybe you did. I think for the purpose of sharing recipes, it makes perfect sense to utilize...

Freak of Science...a NEIPA turned clear...?

Just from my own experience, the haze appears to be more so a product of heavy whirlpool additions rather than dry hop additions. I also believe the bio transformation requirement is a little blown out of proportion although it likely helps distribute those nice hop oils. I didn’t see your hop...

A question about making wort to use for starter

If I’m not able to pull some extra wort off a brew day, it isn’t worth the time to make a mini batch. DME is way too easy and doesn’t even really need to be boiled, although it helps from a sanitary standpoint. I think your problem is you are just boiling WAY too long, years seems excessive. 5...

    Southeastern VA/Eastern NC???

Epiphany malt house in Durham will also sell to home brewers, although they prefer you purchase through a lhbs. But they did say they wouldn’t turn anybody down if they showed up to buy. I think their prices were around $45/sack. Both carolina malt house and epiphany were very responsive when I...

    Southeastern VA/Eastern NC???

FYI, Carolina Malt House in Statesville area will sell 50# sacks to home brewers. They just started up a few months ago and only have ‘base’ malt, Pilsner malt and distillers malt. Prices are something like $.45/lb for Pilsner and $.55/lb for base if I remember correctly. I picked up a sack of...

    Mash Tun choices

This was my old setup for 3.5 gallon BIAB batches using a turkey fryer kit, 5 gallon paint strainer and rope ratchet pulley. Can be upscaled to larger batches with a larger pot/cooler and bag. Pulley is rated for 75 pounds or something like that. Woolite has mesh laundry bags that can be a cheap...

    Mash Tun choices

For when you want to brew that RIS or 10 gallon batch. This 70 quart is what I use, my previous 52 quart tun was overflowing when I mashed in a RIS. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AU6GB2K/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 And the bargain fittings or brewhardware 2.5” nipple cooler bulkhead fits just...

    BIAB questions

BIAB typically doesn’t have a separate sparge addition, although it can. What is shown as sparge volume is actually your strike/full volume. Once a typical grain absorption rate around around .125 gallons/pound of grain is added, it take the total volume down to 1.54 boil volume.

What to do with all this Lambic?

I have 15 gallons souring at the moment and I have briefly though about this at times. Ive thought about kegging it just using my same system. Thought being that all beer through that liquid line has been fermented and is kept 38-40 degrees. Any infection risk will be mitigated by the small...

    NEIPA dont’s

I did all of these and made an awesome NEIPA, with the exception of using Conan; I used 1318. One can question the narrative to a point but there’s a reason most of those items come up in discussion. Did any 1 or combination of those items make the NEIPA as great as it is, I don’t know. I just...

Pump wort directly from kettle to fermenter

I used this same pump to recirculate boiling wort for 5 minutes for sanitization purposes, then 30 minutes more for 180F whirlpool then through a counterflow chiller to fermenter. It works like a champ.

    What makes a neipa hazy?

This is a from a 10 gallon batch that used 2 pounds of hops total. 1 pound in the whirlpool (8oz at 180 and 8oz at 150) and 1 pound as a dry hop (8oz at high Krause and 8oz for 4 days). Total fermentation time was 9 days before kegging. The haze immediately appeared during the first whirlpool...

    NEIPA dont’s

For the record, I think the whirlpool hop amount was a little much. 10 oz total in whirlpool would probably suffice.

    NEIPA dont’s

I just kegged a 10 gallon batch (11 in the fermentor) that used 2 pounds of hops. 1 pound in the whirlpool (8 oz at 180, 8 oz at 150) and 1 pound as dry hop (8 oz at high krausen, 8 oz for 5 days) total fermentation time of 8 days then cold crash. I think big components to NEIPA are: Water...
