Two questions...bottle bombs and gravity change

I think I figured out my problem. It occurred to me this morning when I woke up. When I put in the priming sugar, I didn't mix it with water first, and let it boil for a few minutes. I just dumped it straight into the bottling bucket. I'm not sure why I did that...I just did. Could that...

Two questions...bottle bombs and gravity change

No, don't think so. I still have it sitting in the test tube. What I used to take the reading from was what was in the bottom of the bucket. It was just some final left overs. There was some lees in the bottom of the bucket. Could that be it?

Two questions...bottle bombs and gravity change

I was aiming for 3 on the carbonation volume. I poured the priming sugar in the bottom of the bottling bucket. My fermentors have spigots on them. I attached a tube to the spigot, placed the tube in the bottom of the bucket, opened spigot. Basically what you just described. I also used a...

Two questions...bottle bombs and gravity change

I just bottled a batch of honey wheat beer. I was guessing the volume at 4.5 gallons. Using Northern Brewers priming calculator, that called for 5.39 ounces. When I siphoned into my bottling bucket, I only came up with 4 gallons. I rechecked the priming calculator, that came up with 4.69...

    Carbonation drops question

Too late...I already bottled using the drops. It's a hard apple cider, I only need it to be a little fizzy, not gushing over with foam.

    Carbonation drops question

I'm getting ready to use carb drops for the first time ever. It just occurred to me, do I need to sanitize those things before putting them in the bottles?

To rack or not to rack?

That is my question. I started a cider kit 7 days ago. The instructions with the kit say to let it sit for 6 days, which I did. I wanted to rack it into a secondary and add some cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, and oak cubes, and let that sit for about 2 weeks. But, I had to order those and...

    What spices to add?

I purchased an apple cider kit to make my first cider. It's a basic apple cider that I want to make into a spiced apple cider. The kit is supposed to make 6 gallons, but I think I'll only top it up to 5 gallons. What do I need, or should I add to it? How much do I need? And when do I add...

    Cider newbie questions

I'm wanting to make some cider. Never done it before. Do you use the same equipment that you use to ferment beer and wine? I'm going to try a Brewers Best Cider House kit. Are those any good? Do you need to carbonate it? Or is it fine the way it is when it's done?

    Bottle Labels

Try this site: http://www.beerclings.com/ You can design your own and they are reusable. I think they go for about 50 cents a label.

Can Fusels Be Caused By Secondary Ferm?

Just to throw in a comment. I made a maple syrup dark ale earlier this year. The kit came with maple syrup. I bought an extra bottle identical to the one that came with the kit to carb it with for a little more maple flavor. I didn't boil the maple syrup used for priming, just straight out...

    Cracked my stovetop

You can. I'm not saying it will be cheap, but cheaper than buying an entirely new stove. Find the make and model number and google it. I watched a friend do one once. You just unplug and plug in, it's not that difficult. I would unplug the stove first though.

    How to back sweeten mead

I already had the honey. It's been racked several times. I know my math was off on the amount of honey needed. I redid it and came out with about 3 cups...3.084 to be exact...I only have 4 gallons of mead. I was going to round down to 3 cups. After two years it's really dry. The only...

    How to back sweeten mead

Okay, so I put 4 ounces into 4 glasses...4 per glass. Then I added a half tsp to one glass, and 1 tsp to the second glass. The second glass is what I want. My math came up with 171 ounces/21 cups of honey for the 5 gallons. I actually have less than that. I'm going to rack it into a...
