Spruce up a Mr Beer kit

@jonmonho...no we didn't use the lid yeast. I brought over a pack of S04. Figured it'd be pretty safe to use. I like to coriander idea. May give that a shot. If it's gonna end up with a watered down character the coriander might be a better option than dry hop. Would using DME rather than dex...

Spruce up a Mr Beer kit

Cool thx. We'll mess around a bit. I'm gonna bring a bunch of equipment over to his house on bottling day and we are gonna do a 5g all grain batch of something so he can see how to do it and decide if he's gonna get the equipment needed. He's already got the bug lol. Either that or I bet some...

Spruce up a Mr Beer kit

So I helped my brother in law with his first brew from a Mr Beer kit he got for Christmas. Followed directions as written. It's the "American light" kit. My question is what can he/we do before bottling that might spruce it up a bit? Dry hop it? Add some fruit extract or secondary over fruit...

    MN Brewers Question

OOPS... I just realized my clerical error. BnG is in Spring Lake Park not St Louis Park. Big difference lol.

    MN Brewers Question

Midwest = NB now right? Or is that just from a .com and distribution standpoint? My office is 5min from NB on Grand so I've gone there many times. I really liked the vibe at Brew and Grow. It shows that it's a small, family run place. Prices are good and the recipes look decent for kits but NB...

    First Apfelwein

While my batch that inspired this post was my first, my LHBS said I can essentially use anything I want. I read in some other posts here that people have used ale yeasts but I wanted to stay closer to the wine strains and went with the Cote de Blanc on the recommendation of the guy at the store...

    MN Brewers Question

Can anyone give me some input on the kits at Brew and Grow in St Louis Park vs the NB kits? NB has lots of reviews from far and wide whereas BnG has much less. I went in there today and the people seem nice as well as being closer to my home than NB. Just curious. Thanks all!

    First Apfelwein

No trouble at all for me. Only took about 10min to throw together and my main influence was to get the 1g glass jug the juice came in. Half gallon of awesome organic juice for the kids and 1/2 gal for me :) That cote de blanc is quite vigorous. It's still bubbling like a champ as of now. Two...

    First Apfelwein

Hello all. After getting my feet wet making some beer (with mixed results lol) I stumbled across Apfelwein and figured I would give it a go since I was going to buy some good AJ for the repurposing if the glass 1g jug :) I did read about Edworts recipe and intend on tossing that together in a...

    Better...but not there yet

Some bottles only soak for an hour. Some quite a bit longer. I only do it for label removal purposes. I use my tap water. My next brew will be with spring water. I'm whittling down the variables as I go. This is exactly why I've been doing 1g recipes. Last potential issue could be the ferm...

    Better...but not there yet

No bottles from the first batch were used in this new one. I used 12oz bottles for the last batch and pint bottles (except for the one 12oz I just opened) for this. Same label removal process but this time I took much more care to rinse well. I read somewhere on here to try a bath of vinegar...

    Better...but not there yet

Ok gang. Any advice is appreciated. First batch tasted terrible. I got some great input inside this forum and from others in the outside world. I made a few changes and my second batch has improved to drinkable, but nothing I'm willing to call good. NB Bavarian Hefe extract kit. (1g)...

How long is too long in the primary

I did a 1gal Caribou Slobber kit a little while back that had bad soapy off flavors. I spoke with a trusted friend and the folks at Northern Brewer and both said the same thing, it sat on the yeast too long. And it was there for three weeks. Meanwhile, on this (and other) forums I always hear...

    Top off water

Just wrapped a 1gal NB Hefe kit. Well...about 1.5hr ago. All went well but I ended up with about .8gal wort in the fermenter post boil and OG was 1.054 which seems slightly high. Should I leave it be or top it to 1gal with some tap water?

    Noooo!

Correct. I did this current 1g in my regular non stick cooking pot. I also have a turkey fryer for when I do 5g that's aluminum. I will make sure to 'season' the aluminum before I brew with it. I'm going to try bottled water next and use a swamp cooler as well. I'll likely do another 1g batch...

    Noooo!

I don't have a regular method of temp control. I'm all set from a knowledge and ability standpoint to convert a freezer into a ferm chamber but I'm waiting for my wallet to catch up :) I had it set in my laundry room which over the last few weeks (which were nasty cold) stays in the 62-65...

    Noooo!

Thanks for the advice. Northern Brewer is based 15min from my house and their original (and busiest) store is right by my office. I would hope that they are turning kits over enough to where the freshness isn't an issue but who knows. Just a bump on what will be a long road of awesome beer :)

    Noooo!

Didn't think about the water. My water is pretty good here but I may try an additional filter. The pot I used was my everyday cooking pot. It's a nonstick one though. I'm intending on my next batch to be a 5gal using my new (I'll do the pre boil thing) aluminum pot. I'll try the others that I...

    Noooo!

My first ever brew...tastes like crap. Caribou Slobber. 1g extract kit. Brewed it to the letter. OG/FG spot on. No sign of infection. 3wks primary, 12 days in bottle. Cracked one open tonight to try and it's pretty bad. Can't describe it but its almost kind of metallic. With a hint of rubbing...
