2.5 Gallon Batches - Is it worth making a starter?

I really only use liquid yeast which is about 90-95 billion cells per vial by the time I'm pitching. Some of my recipes have calculated 110-120 billion cells. Is it worth making a starter for that much of a gain? Will I experience anything besides slightly slower fermentation by...

Anyone have Pin Lock 3 Gallon Kegs? Need help making a decision

I just recently re-geared for 2.5 gallon batches. I found these http://www.homebrewing.org/FOUR-3-Gallon-Cornelius-Style-Pin-Lock-Used-Kegs-_p_4673.html Anyone with pin lock experience : Do these kegs look like replacement parts would be easy to locate or am I buying into something...

Best Kettle For Price for 2.5 gallon BIAB

Title says it all, going to be doing oven-assisted mashing, just need something that will get me full volume mashing and boils for 2.5 gallon batches. Probaby 4 gallon liquid plus the grain. The price difference for 5 gallon and 7.5 gallon pots is crazy (for tri-clad heavy duty stuff). I'd...

BIAB Day : New Grain Mill and Wort Clarity

I'm so used to the LHBS crush that I didn't know what properly crushed grain looked like. Wow! .038, ran it through twice. My efficiency went from about 65% to 84%, nothing special, mashing at 153-154 for one hour, putting my bag in a bucket with a bunch of holes drilled in the bottom...

    Temporary storage in snap containers

I have some of these : http://www.walmart.com/ip/23000774?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227017357147&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=35443512276&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=50597902116&veh=sem I put sanitizer in it for about 30 minutes, shook it around a few times, dumped it, and put 250mL of yeast...

    Scaling down your operation

Have you guys ever realized that you're in a bit over your head? I just recently moved to a new area and unfortunately I don't have much of a social life yet and with my new job starting it looks like i won't have much of one ever. I'm geared for 10 gallon recipes, which is just a joke at...

    Reading pH strips

Alright so I bought some pH strips that go from 4.6-5.8 from Precision Labs. If I follow the instructions and take the reading after 10-15 seconds my water is 5.0. If I check again after about 45 seconds it reads 6.2+ (very dark purple). Should I be concerned about this? It seems to get...

    75 Micron Bucket Filters - Cold/Hot Break?

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003EDZO0G/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 This has piqued my interest. Will a filter of this size, 75 micron, filter out the hot/cold break material? Or does a finer filter have to take that job? I put all of my hops in a bag so that isn't really what I need...

Give me some ideas - Blowing my Amazon Credit

So I just realized that I've accrued about $175 in amazon credit via returns/gift cards over the past year. What would you spend it on? I'm thinking a few used kegs but I find them on craigslist cheaper. Maybe a Thermapen? What would you buy (homebrew related)

NY Brew Supply Mill - Cereal Killer?

http://www.nybrewsupply.com/mill.html They look identical. I have about $110 of credit at this store because of a return so I'd like to spend it on a mill, but this is the only one they have. Anyone have experience with this mill?

    Fixing a watery beer

Hey guys, so in my first attempt at BIAB full mash my temp was a bit low due to some inaccurate thermometer readings, I mashed about 4 degrees below ideal. This led to a very fermentable wort and a saison with a thinner mouthfeel. It is kegged and carbonated. Any way to boost it up a bit...

Brew Day - Second attempt at BIAB - Pics

So I calculated for 70% efficiency just to be safe this time around as I came up a bit short last time (it was my first try and my mash was all messed up temp-wise). the crush : The mash (lol) : It's been at 156 for 35 minutes now. My goal was 155 or 154 so not bad!

Do you filter/gelatin every beer style?

I've been curious about this lately. I tossed my usual amount of gelatin into a saison I made a while ago, and sure enough after about a week in the keg, it was running crystal clear. Unfortunately it seems that all of the saison goodness left with the yeast. The beer was crystal clear...

If you could only ferment at room temp (68-72F)...

What yeast would you use? I find that when I do my saisons with 3711 I can just let my fermenter sit in my basement at mid-upper 60s, then move it upstairs once most of primary is done to mid 70s and I get great beer. Whereas most ale yeasts I've used, this would NOT fly (not even close)...

    Valve Leaks on Kettle

Alright so I filled my pot up today to do a fake run with my new setup and my valve has a slow drip. I tried extra plumbers tape, I tried a silicone O-ring that the manufacturer provided and it just squishes out to the sides and doesn't make a seal when I tighten the valve to the pot. Any...

What do you do with your CFC water?

I drain many many gallons of water while using my CFC. It is pretty warm, what do you guys do with it? I'm trying to find some way to justify using this lol If I don't shower that day, and I use the large bucket of water I drain off to do a load of laundry, maybe... What do you guys...

3/8" vs 1/2" copper coil for chiller

Just wondering if anyone here has experience in comparing these two diameters and their cooling efficiency. The price difference at my local hardware store is crazy between the two. I'm doing 10 gallon batches in a 15 gallon pot so I need something more than my 20' starter chiller.

Using the outdoor hose in the winter

So I wanted to rig up my counterflow chiller today, but the temp last night was about 10. High for today is low 30s. Am I at risk for a pipe burst if I use the outdoor spigot? I have my own hose for this process that I keep indoors, not going to leave it attached to the spigot outside when...

    New Counterflow Chiller - Problem

Since my drainvalve is a 1/2" valve, my fittings are all 1/2" and my silicone tubing is also 1/2" ID. As you can see, this is far too big to go on the copper coil. Any ideas on how to remedy this for my brew day tomorrow? I don't think a pipe clamp is going to cut it here. maybe?
