Fruit Beer Hopped Blood Orange Hefeweizen

I just caught something (please confirm to verify my understanding). The oranges are used 3 times... 1) grate (zest) the orange peel and create orange tea 2) the actual oranges are included in orange tea 3) The tea is added to the fermenter, and is not part of the boil/wort 4) the...

    Tax Refund (for 2011 Taxes)

+1 I am a self employed financial planner and echo this comment- some years I cannot write off things, and other years I can, so the refund fluctuates. You might owe $10 in interest on that $40, that assumes 25% tax bracket... The logic you used (in italics) is not very logical. It is...

How Long for the Hefe in Primary?

I did a 2-2-2 Hefe which will be ready tonight or tomorrow warm and if that has carbonation, I will cold condition one more for Wednesday and report back on 2-2-2.

    Friends and memories

Always focus on the good times. My brother died in January of cancer. When I came home from his funeral, I had presents which turned out to be 48 bottles, a brewmaster's best red ale (to brew) and a magazine subscription. We named the beer spaz willy, and went back in to celebrate his 41st...

    Citrus/ Fruit additions and "options"

can you comment more on Chinook, simcoe or cascade hops? Are these common? I have seen 1 recipe with some of those, ran it by one person and he had not heard of them. Will any of those add citrus to the beer? I am aware of the low IBU- that is a German Hefe, so IBU will be low (and I...

    Citrus/ Fruit additions and "options"

Thank you (and thanks to other response as well). I guess I did not realize the complexity of my question and problem. Best to try, taste and learn, I guess.

    Citrus/ Fruit additions and "options"

I will also add that the beer needs to be ready June 22 for her party (drinkable). If I brew it now and miss, I will be trying two different recipes (one brewed this week, the other brewed in 2 weeks) and bottling 100 bottles (50 each of two different recipes), I will gift whichever 50 bottles...

    Citrus/ Fruit additions and "options"

I have read numerous threads on adding Amarillo hops, lemon zest, lime zest, oranges and other fruits to beer. I have a few random questions I'd like to consolidate to one location for my own reference. My beer preference is a Heifeweizen or a dunkelweizen. Lots of wheat for sure... I...

Cooling wort at a low cost

This gave me a few ideas, however I need to rethink freezer space. We have little freezers (two of them) and creating a sheet of ice for the bottom to rest on/melt has some merit. why only half way up?

Cooling wort at a low cost

From boil to ferment is about 24-36 hours. I currently go from boil to ferment start in about 90 minutes.

Classic mistake - late night brewing

I do most of my brewing in evening once kids go to bed. I have had only 1 beer go for 8 hours, that was because tap water was too hot for steeping grains at 120 degrees.

You are the second person to tell me this, I need to investigate this more, thx for tip.

Cooling wort at a low cost

This would take longer than the 90 minutes it takes me now, what would the benefits be?

Cooling wort at a low cost

Can you post a picture of the cooler? This is a cooler like I would use for tailgaiting? So a hose from sink/faucet to wort chiller, then ice bath in the cooler, and have a way to regenerate/ refill the cooler with water... This makes the most sense of anything I read in this thread, thank you.

Cooling wort at a low cost

I am not quite ready to finish my basement and spend $$ to install a wort chilling system. Right now I empty my ice tray in sink, make a cold water bath, put the pot in the bath, then let wort cool to about 80 degrees, then transfer to fermenter, add water and knock temperature down to 70-75...
