How many times do you reuse your bottles?

^^^ this! I had some bottles of stout blow up on me. It's enough to put the fear of God in you when you start handling the other bottles.

How many times do you reuse your bottles?

That was extremely enlightening, and I read it all with care. To be honest, I wasn't planning on berry punching you but, even if I were, you didn't give me much to work with. Two questions: 1) So with, say, a bridge: They are designed to stay well within elastic deformation (with large...

How many times do you reuse your bottles?

With all due respect to you and your education, one of the first things I was taught in "Strengths of Materials" was that all materials lose structural integrity with fatigue. Let's assume for a bit that I misunderstood my professor and he was speaking strictly of metals, but if that were the...

How many times do you reuse your bottles?

Pressure cycling. It gradually weakens the bottles over time. It is a normal fatigue problem. I notice it as small crevices that form along the surface that kind of look like molding imperfections. I toss them at that point, just to be safe.

What is your most useless piece of brewing equipment?

I thought something was wrong with that lady... Thanks for the new stuff! Just kidding of course... That's terrible. Have you murdered her yet?

Why is my final gravity low.

Now don't go thinking this is the God's honest truth, but I have a theory about this, since I have had a similar thing happen to me. Granted, I'm all grain so a low mash temperature might be able to do this too, but hear me out. So when we talk about attenuation, we really mean apparent...

Boiling Wort: Looking for an answer based on science

I see no one has mentioned it, but the boil drives off DMS precursors. It's true that there are beers that are "no boil", though I'm not sure "no boil" is a modern standard practice. Some people are really sensitive to DMS and claim they can test it in a "no boil" beer. The other thing is...

    Jim Koch is not happy

I used to work in one of the largest liquors in CT and it might not surprise you how often BMC drinkers pick up a case of Boston Lager for their craft beer loving friends. It might surprise you that some of our most knowledgeable craft beer customers would also pick up a case for their friends...

    A Bottle Goes Dark

    Cold Press Coffee

Interesting: I'm making a gruit tomorrow and I will be adding coffee at high krausen. I was thinking of only adding two cups cold pressed dark roast: It's going to be a pale beer with the exception of two lbs of toasted oats. I would love to hear more about this if anyone has something to share

    Jim Koch is not happy

Interesting read. It stands to reason that if everyone around me had heady topper on tap and I was going to make a niche bar, I would probably buy kegs of other great beers and not Heady Topper. For what it's worth, the article seems like it's just taking a nice long pause to crap on Jim Koch...

    wood aged liquor experiment

This is what I get for trying to make a wise-guy comment for laughs... a guy who takes it seriously.

"Wood Aged Liquor" I think they call this "whiskey"...

    Wedding Gift: All Grain Equipment

I have gotten lazy with my terminology: I only ever use an auto siphon and that is what I was thinking of when I said "racking cane". Good catch though!

    Wedding Gift: All Grain Equipment

Actually... one more question: It's been a very long time since I used them, but what about those .5 liter brown PET bottles? That might be better for him rather than glass, caps and a capper...

You are so right, I forgot all about those two items. thanks!

    Wedding Gift: All Grain Equipment

I am going to a wedding of a friend and band mate who works for a beer distributor. He himself is into craft beer and has gone to one of those places that will help you brew 15 gallons of whatever beer you want. He has invited me to his wedding and is letting my girlfriend come with me so I...
