dubbel grain bill: aromatic, special b, or both?

So the jamil z recipe I found online uses both, but I've also seen some with one or the other? Any thoughts or stories? Im planning on using some pilsner malt plus Munich and dark Candi syrup.

    Too much carapils? what happens?

I'm not really trying to convert the Carapils, I just wonder what almost 3 times the normal amount of it will do to the beer. Northbay - they do that for non-kits as well, with a drop down menu to have all the stuff you want added to a combined bag. All optional. I forget his name, but one of...

    Too much carapils? what happens?

I was thinking of mashing lower. I usually mash at 158, mostly out of habit, since I'm no expert on mashing levels (I do partial/mini-mash beers, so I'm not as concerned about efficiency as you all-grain guys). I could do the mash at 154 and hope that compensates. Love the buy the same recipe...

    Too much carapils? what happens?

Yeah, AustinHomebrew is so rad they assemble your stuff in recipe bags if you indicate such. I did, not realizing I'd made the error of 1.5 carapils instead 0.5 carapils. So basically, it's already in the bag with my pilsner and rye malts.

    Too much carapils? what happens?

I just ordered a homemade recipe from AustinHomebrew. Accidentally got 1.5 lbs of Carapils in the recipe bag, instead of 0.5, and noticed it too late to correct it. I am tempted to just go ahead and use the recipe, but does anyone know what happens with too much carapils? Weird flavors...

    Recipe critique - Rye IPA

granted, its wet tettnang and not the usual dry stuff us homebrewers get, but its used in Two Brother's Heavy Handed IPA and is delicious... I have used Chinook as a flavoring hop, in a crazy APA recipe, when I first started brewing. I liked it.

How do I move to the next level?

Well, I don't entirely agree with the statement that it is better, for two reasons. 1. Fresh LME has served me well 2. Late Addition use of Fresh LME makes beer without what many consider to be the flaw in LME, which is that it leaves a very noticeable (to a beer nut, i.e. all of us...

    Oak Aged Porter Recipe...(extract)

Any thoughts on the following recipe? .5 lbs. American Chocolate Malt .5 lbs. American Black Patent .5 lbs. American Caramel 60°L 1 lbs. Munich Malt 7.5 lbs. Liquid Light Extract 1 oz. Target (Pellets, 8.0 %AA) boiled 60 min. .5 oz. Challenger (Pellets, 6.5 %AA) boiled 15 min...

How do I move to the next level?

DME looks like powder/flour. It's a little higher in gravity per pound in comparison to LME.

How do I move to the next level?

I find LME is just as good as DME, when I use fresh stuff bought from Northern Brewer or AHS, and not the canned stuff that's been sitting on shelves forever. Definitely look into partial brewing, where you are doing very temperature-controlled grain mashing/steeping to actual get fermentable...

    Oak Chips, yes or no?

I'd like to hear some about brewing successes and failures with adding oak chips to a beer. Does the flavor at all approximate real oak-aging? Would you make a beer like this again? Did it taste AWESOME? I'm very tempted to get either an oak-aged porter kit from AHS or NB, or re-make my...

American Wheat Beer Seth Feld's Gumball Toe

After a side by side taste test, it would seem that Gumball Head is a maltier beer with a little more body. Mine perhaps tastes like an Amarillo and Warrior version of Uber Hop Sun by Southern Tier... I wonder, given that I did use 1/4lb of 120L, if the maltier taste of the Gumball Head was...

Puffed up ok indeed. No starter though, I really need to get a starter kit and start making them regularly.

so i activated the pack around 3pm yesterday, but unfortunately couldn't actually brew as planned. Last minute realization basically... So I'm wondering if I can go ahead and use it today, about 28 hours later, as is...
