    help needed ASAP before pitching

I make one gallon batches and pitch 1/2 vial of White Labs each time. I poured 1/2 vial into a sterilized (with Iodophor) mason jar and I am going to pitch in about 30 minutes. I just picked up the mason jar and noticed a black speck in the slurry. Should I pitch this yeast or toss it? are...

Overshot recipe OG, will my FG be higher?

I brewed this recipe a few weeks back: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f66/citra-pale-ale-oddsides-clone-375338/ OG per the recipe was 1.058, with expected FG of 1.012. When I brewed I got OG of 1.068. I used WLP001 and after 3 weeks in fermentor, it is at 1.024. Question is: If I...

    Questions about splitting up starter

Sometime in the upcoming week I will engage in my first attempt creating a starter. I make 1 gallon batches so I've always just pitched a half vial. I plan to make a 1.2 liter starter that is appropriate for a 5 gallon batch, then splitting that up into 4 jars and using each jar for a 1 gallon...

1 gal batches - multiple from 1 vial?

I am a 1 gallon brewer. I use White Labs vials. Using Mr Malty, my pitching rate is .4-.6 vials per batch, dependent on OG. Here is the question: Can I create a starter that would be appropriate for a 5 gallon batch, then divide that starter up between 4 or 5 containers and just pitch 1 of...

    Whoops, forgot Irish Moss

With the crazy hop schedule of the beer I made today, I forgot to add the Irish Moss. The cooled wort definitely did not have the cold break as it usually does. It's racked and on the yeast now. Is there anything I can do in the primary to help the beer clear?

Black IPA recipe feedback, if you please?

Looking for comments on the following recipe I've come up with: Brewers Malt 2-Row (Briess) (1.8 SRM) 75.0 % Munich 20L (Briess) (20.0 SRM) 7.1 % Oats, Flaked (1.0 SRM) 7.1 % Midnight Wheat (Briess) (550.0 SRM) 5.4 % Black Barley (Briess)...

    Insane boil off rate?

So I finally decided today to actually check my boil off rate. I boiled 160 oz of water for 1 hour and ended up with 102 oz. That is a boil off rate of 36%! Does something seem wrong with this? Seems outrageously high to me.

Cascade+Amarillo for Aroma and Dry hop

Planning a recipe for a CDA/Black IPA/American Style Black Ale, or whatever it is being called these days. Has anyone had experience with Cascade+Amarillo for late hopping and dry hopping? If so, what did you think of that combo? Thanks! EDIT: FWIW, I plan to FWH with Warrior. My current...

    Strike water temp?

BeerSmith tells me to use 161.9 for my temp at desired thickness. However, the calculator over on www.rackers.org tells me to use 166. Which one is correct? EDIT: Should have done a search of the forum before posting. I've got my answer. Moderator, please delete.

New to the forum from Portland, OR

Hi all. New to the forum, recently returned to brewing after a few years hiatus. In my previous brewing experience, I brewed 5 gallon extract batches. In my reincarnation, I'm brewing 1 gallon all grain. That's right, 1 gallon. It's a good size for a small apartment. Don't have to hog up a...

What is that stuff in my brew kettle?

So I saw something tonight in my brew kettle, after racking into the primary, that I've never seen before. It was like 20 or so little gelatinous balls of goo, slightly smaller than, say, a kernel of corn. What is that stuff? I used Midnight Wheat, which I've never used before, so I'm...
