    Non-Alcoholic Brew Question

So I'm splitting a batch of pumpkin ale so that I can make 1/2 non-alcoholic for my pregnant wife. I heated to 180 degrees for a good period of time. Is there a good way to confirm the alcohol is gone? From what I've read, others simply taste. That doesn't seem so accurate to me. As I predicted...

    Kegging mead

1st time making mead... Couple questions. 1. Planning to make 5 gallon batch. When I rack to carboy, how much head space will there be? Is it worth adding a couple more lbs of honey and making 5.5 or 6 gallons? 2. I'd like to make 1/2 still and 1/2 sparkling. Is there anything wrong with putting...

    Substitute?

I'm doing my first all grain. Will there be a huge difference if I substitute a cheaper malt for Maris otter pale? What would be a good sub?

    Quick biab question

Purchasing a biab kettle. I want to use it for 5-12 gal batches. Better to get a 20 gal (18"D x 16"H) to 25 gal (20"D x 20"H)? I purchased a 29" x 29" bag so I think either will work. I've read that the larger is nice because no worry of boil over. Any thoughts or advice?

My first go at all grain...

I'm moving on from extracts to BIAB. I bought a 15 gallon mash tun with false bottom. Is there a rule of them as to how much extra water to add per pound of grain? I want to end with 5 gallons, but I know the grain will retain some water and there will also be evaporation during the boil. Also...

    CoffeeStout Flavoring

I'm brewing a coffee stout. The recipe says to crush coffee beans and drop them in the secondary ~24hours before bottling. However, it also acknowledges that one could cold brew the beans to a concentrate and add at bottling. Does anyone have any recommendations for getting good coffee flavor...

How long will my beer last?

I'm getting married next June and brewing beer for the wedding. I purchased 3 extract kits (coffee stout, Irish red ale, honeyweizen) about 2 months ago with the thought of trying them before the big day. However, I currently have over 3 full kegs brewed so I'm not sure ill get to them. I put...

    Did i mess up?

I'm making an American Pale Ale. I ordered ingredients online and my wyyeast American ale yeast canoe partially inflated. I was told this is common for this yeast but they I could put it in the refrigerator and it would keep fine. When I went to activate the yeast it was so inflated I could...

    Total fermentation time...

I'm going to brew a tripel based upon a recipe from an extract kit. There will be no additions after fermentation begins so I'm planning to just leave it in the primary bucket rather than transfer to a secondary. The expected abv is 8.5% and the recipe calls for 1-2 weeks primary and 1 month...

    Differences in malt extract?

Seems like every store has their own extracts. Are they all similar? Specifically, I found a recipe that calls for Northern Brewer Gold Malt Syrup. I'm making a blonde ale. Will another light extract be just the same? Like Briess Golden Light?

    Hydrometer help!

Hello, I am very new to home brewing and I'm having difficulty with my hydrometer readings. I tried to do an initial reading prior to fermentation and my hydrometer only sunk to the bottom of the tube. I tried again with just water and same result. I contacted my vendor and they gave me a new...
