    BIAB and Water PH

It seems like you are balking at using 50ML of Phosphoric because it seems like a lot.. I would not worry about using that much. Dgallo is right that an acid at a higher concentration would require less, but phosphoric is tasteless. I use around 50 ish ML of phosphoric when I am brewing too...

To Filter or Not To Filter

You might be able to resolve the issue without filtering with a closed transfer to a clean, CO2 purged keg after pulling the first cloudy pints off a keg that has been sitting long enought for the sediment to settle. This should ensure you leave the bulk of the sediment in the original keg and...

My First BIAB - Didn't Think This Through

You have options. You can calculate your total water needed for mash and then leave out a couple gallons so that you don't overflow your kettle during mash. For example if you need 7.75 gallons of water you could try mashing in with 5 gallons. the mash will work, it is just thicker. Then...

Good recipe for using Chinook hops?

    Arrogant Bastard clone. This is for a 6 gallon batch. 14 lbs 4.8 oz Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) 1 lbs 9.7 oz Special B Malt (150.0 SRM) 24.00 gm Chinook [13.00 %] (85 min) 24.00 gm Chinook [13.00 %] (45 min) 24.00 gm Chinook [13.00 %] (30 min) 24.00 gm Chinook [13.00 %] (15 min) Dry...

    Burner sufficient?

The bigger burners like the Blichmann are not required, but they are a worthwhile investment once you are sure this is a hobby you want to invest in. They do heat up a bit faster (put out more BTU's), are quieter and are a bit more gas efficient. I love my Blichmann burner, but I started on...

BIAB and the reduction of tannins

I agree with KH54s10. Tannin extraction is a function of temperature and PH. If we are monitoring temperature and PH the way we should during the mash the chances of extracting tannins are extremely low if not impossible. BUT... If you are not paying attention to mash PH and you are careless...

    Maintaining mash temp

You can go even cheaper. Get a movers blanket from Harbor Freight. They are dirt cheap and work great at insulating your kettle. Easy to replace if it gets destroyed too.

    Maintaining mash temp

I agree with Wilser... Wrap your kettle and walk away. BIAB is all about simplifying the process. it will make just as good of beer as more complicated methods if you keep track of what is important. Besides, if you lose a degree here or there in the mash, it will be fine. It really won't...

Best 10 gallon brew pot and gas burner to get

Get the Blichmann burner. Without a doubt the best. Even for 5 gallon batches it is worth the extra cash. Heats fast and efficiently which you will appreciate no matter what size batch you make. On Pots.... Whatever suits your fancy. All good SS brew pots should heat evenly and hold up...

Measuring and dispensing liquids like acid

Medicine syringes given for free with kids antibiotics are great for very small amounts and measure in milliliters.

    First all-grain BIAB

h22lude is correct. Water does affect the beer you are able to produce due to the interplay of the malt and other ingredients with your water's chemistry. This is complicated and can result in some weird flavors you have not run into with your partial mash brews. However, will this result...

    Stuck Fermentation vs. Unfermentables

Refractometer is not accurate without adjustments when alcohol is present. There are calculators available on-line which will provide adjusted readings. Otherwise, you should use a hydrometer to measure FG. Also, if it was a strong ferment, it may be at FG.

    There goes my perfect record

Don't be surprised when beer tastes odd after only a few hours under burst carb. You can be experiencing "Carbonic bite". The CO2 has not gone fully into solution. Expect your beer taste to change quite a bit in the keg over the first few weeks. Personally, I do not burst carb. I set my...

    There goes my perfect record

This is definitely a RDWHAHB moment. Don't panic. It will be beer. There may be no issues. You won't know till it is carbed and serving.

    SS Brewbucket Review

Agree on the opportunity cost. Buckets are cheap and if the get damaged, they are easy to replace. For me the ability to add the FTSs was key. I do not have room for a dedicated fermentation fridge. This gives me the same capability with a smaller space and energy footprint.

    SS Brewbucket Review

Big fan of the BrewBucket here. I did not have any issue cleaning mine. I followed the instructions from SS Brewtech to clean with a TSP solution. It is an extra step and takes some effort, but I found it cleaned the bucket very well. I do agree with the issue with the rotating dip tube. You...

    10 gallon brewpot large enough?

I have a 10 Gallon aluminum pot and also only brew 5 gallon batches. I have never had an issue with boil overs. Also, I do full volume BIAB mashes in my pot as well and have had no issues with volumes. If you are only ever going to do 5 gallon batches, a 10 gallon pot is really all you need.

Coffee Oat Porter (Breakfast porter?) recipe

Have you used this recipe before? I would strongly recommend cutting down the Black Patent malt. 2lbs is a lot. I think that would be very bitter and astringent. Definitely would be more towards a Stout than a porter.

Every beer has the same off flavor

+1 for buying water for your next batch. Don't change anything else. Rule causes out one by one. Otherwise you will never know which fix solved the issue. I would not expect astringency if you are using BruN Water and it is predicting a good PH. Astringency extraction is a reuslt of high PH...
