    Double-mash into software…?

I've been a BSM user for quite a while, but unsure how to log a double mash (that is use the first mash runnings to mash a second grain bed) in the software. Any insights into this? Any other softwares like Brewers Friend capable of this?

Spiced holiday ale into bourbon barrel.

I have a 15 gallon charred American oak bourbon barrel from a small distillery that produced a wonderful BBS that I just bottled and kegged after three weeks with two stout fractions in the barrel. There's a lot of bourbon left in the wood and the barrel is still free of lacto or any unwanted...

    Using Elderberries

I threw this in Lambic/wild cause if I I toss elderberries in primary or the like I'll be introducing something wild for sure. Anyway, I'm brewing up 10 gallons of a simple malt bill with WL American Farmhouse blend and I picked 12 oz of ripe elderberries and was thinking about throwing...

    made-in-china.com conicals?

I'm beyond over not having a closed system and I need a conical! Yes the Morebeers look really nice…That said the $1000 plus legs, casters etc is forcing me to look at the myriad of options from places like made-in-china.com. At $200-$500 a pop and many styles and options I'm wonder whom out...

    Wl 565

I had a vile of White Labs Saison 565. It was about 3.5 months from manufacture date and my brew session wasn't available. I stepped it up to two liters and it performed very well! I cold crashed it in the flask and have about a 100 ml volume of good looking yeast bed. Generally if I step to...

    Got neighbors?

Having great neighbors is really something! And not just as an outlet for beer:) Neighbors have always influenced my life both urban and rural. I'm interested in stories…especially beer stories!

    Steep Bl Patent for color?

Howdy I'm into my boil of black IPA. 20% carafa III didn't really blacken enough. All I got is some crushed black patent. Think some steep time can give me color and not roast flavor?

    Alpha acid storage loss.

How much do folks compensate for alpha acid degradation over storage time? For example BSM advises 50% loss over six months? Does anyone out there use these guidelines to directly re-proportion their bitter hop bill? IE doubling down for the above example?... Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

help my ghetto rig cold smoker idea?!?!

Hey Friends, It's my first time; I've got a 20 lb. pork belly in my freezer. I'll probably cut a few slices to save, but after salt curing I'd like to cold smoke it. My plan is to build a disposable smokehouse out of a big heavy cardboard box. The top can be another thick cardboard piece...

    blending cultures

I had a very positive result recently pitching multiple yeasts after thinking I was experiencing fermentation lag due to low cell count. Turns out I had a cracked and leaky airlock stopper. It could be that the original culture did all the work, but after pitching two more differing strains of...

    Southern Hemisphere Hops

I just got William's Southern Hemisphere Pellets bonus hops including Jade, Galaxy, Gem, Topaz and Summer. I've only tasted a few beers like Sierra's SH which is bright, aromatic and grassy along with some similar home-brews. What do folks think of these hops in their modern American style...

    Quick randalizer question

I'll sterilize my in-line infuser equipment, but what about steaming hops like when I dry hop (not planning to)? Second, do others blow it off with CO2 before hooking it into tap line? I see the benefit, but since a beernut is not 1/2" NPT it'd kind of a pain! Thoughts?

    Black IPA specifics.

Here's what I posted to the Heavenly Scourge recipe thread which seems to dead. I've been looking for a black IPA template and thread and this is the most helpful so far. I've tried to read most of it, but I have couple questions I'd love to get some feedback on. First it sounds like most...

    British Mild hop regime.

Hey guys I'm mashing up 8lb 2-row, 8lb German pils, 1.5 lb Maris, 1 Cry 60, and .5 Cry 120 to be pitched with Lallemands British ale yeast. I'm kinda bent on a hallatertau/Saaz hop regimen, but I'm looking for thoughts and opinions on the application as well as other hop additions. Thanks!

    Curious about cheaper buckets.

I recently got some cheaper food grade bucket fermentors from my LHBS and notice that their not nearly as opaque as the white ones I've always used. Anyone think there's an issue with uv penetrating these buckets? They're not in direct sun, but they're not in the closet.

    Abundant Pilsner Malt.

I like to make a classic Keewenaw summer ale that consists of pilsner base, Vienna and wheat, lightly hopped w Mt Hood. However, it takes a particular palette to enjoy the skunky bitterness of a pilsner base ale. Nonetheless, I've got a 55lb bag of German Pilsner to deal with (no method for...

    Leaving head-space in kegs.

Does anyone have opinions or facts on the leaving of headspace in kegs? I personally can't think of one and like to top them right off. However, for whatever reason it just seems natural to leave a wee bit of head-space. What do you guys do, head space or fill to the brim?
