    Cold-brewed coffee to the boil?

I have a coffee toddy to cold brew coffee & in stouts it works. I've also considered adding a couple packs of Startbucks via at the start of the boil, but haven't yet.

    Eggs

I love eggs. Fried in butter or bacon grease & overeasy does it. I'll warn everyone, you do NOT want to be around me when I eat hard boiled eggs.

    Dogs

What a bunch of cuties. This is our last dog Buddy. He was 16 1/2 when we had to put him down - the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. Don't get me wrong, I luved my Mom, but I cried more when we put him down than at my Mom's funeral. It took us about 3 years to get over...

    New Smoker

scweeet! I got a smoker about 4 years ago & luv it. As said above, slow & low is the way. Get one of those aftermarket electronic thermometers that measures both the temp inside the smoker & has a probe to measure inside temp of meat. Post some pix of your accomplishments. Last...

    Wisdom

Nope. Never. Not any more. I offered my seat to what I though was a pregnant woman once, and it turned out she wasn't pregnant - just fat. Boy did I hear that for the next 5 minutes until the next metro stop. Old or handicapped, sure, but pregnant - unless it's obvious they are just...

Recovering from a bad day at work

Relax & have a drink I use to complain about my 3 hour commute, dealing w/ stress everyday, dealing with, ahh, err, let's just say folks who think they are more important than they really are, but now ever since the dismal economic times, many in my field being out of work for months, if not...

    How close is your (L)HBS

Depends on traffic, but 30 to 45 min. I typically buy in bulk, so end up ordering but for the onesey twosey things, stop by to chat. Just found a cool new store with good people. I luv the old store though because they carry equipment I cant afford, like a $750 conical fermenter.

Slow-to-no activity... Re-pitch? Wait it out?

Amen. Just let the beer do its thing, & rack to a secondary after 10-14 days. I've found if you can, drop the temp in the secondary. If not, relax, dont worry, have a beer.

Steps to coming up with new recipes

Sometimes your beer is dictated by the product you have on hand. I've never done a bad beer. Sometimes a little weak, a little strong, a little sweet, a little hoppy, but never bad (except for the time I used rice) My standard ale came from one of these experiances - hey, got 5 pounds of pale...

    Lagering Trial I

Wow dude. First beer a lager & a mash - you're much more ambition than I was.

    FG a little high

Unless it's a high octane ale, 7-10 days in the primary & its ready for the secondary. You shouldn't leave the beer in the primary for more than 14 days though - I have, beer came out good, but best to rack an ale to a secondary before two weeks. If it's still going in the secondary, wait a...

    Looking for a Burner...

Many supplies have burners. Also outdoor bbq places do to. Get a quality one that kicks out some BTU's. And I dont use aluminum - maybe something I read years ago - save your pennies and get a decent ss brew pot. My first one was a Paul Revere I found at an outlet store for cheap. Ended...

What are some of the mistakes you made...where your beer still turned out great!

I brewed a budweiser style beer w/ rice. Once. And only once. Turned out fine if you like rice-beer. I dont. My buddies polished it off in two nights.

    Kegging beer without CO2

Maybe I'm not getting it, but I'd wait until I got CO2. Couple extra weeks of aging the beer can only help it.

    Pressure in keg keeps rising

Me too. Bleed off the excess carbonation each day & read what the preassure is.

Why should I stick with this frustrating hobby?!

Ditto. Rome wasn't built in a day. All hobbies take time & effort & have a learning curve. If you're not comfortable in the kitchen, and aren't having fun, maybe you took up the wrong hobby? Only you can answer that. I'd take the advise above, relax, try again and then determine if...

If you want to heat up your mash, add boiling water slowly stiring until you're at the right temp. I have a 100,000 btu outdoor burner to boil on and if needed the kitchen stove as a secondary.
