forced to go all grain, and it turned out alright!

Set out to do a partial mash biab oktoberfest yesterday, and as I was heating my water up for the mash I burnt a hole in the bag which became large enough to leak out all my grain as I dumped it in. So I improvised with what I had at home. Mash in was 3.5 gallons of water at 155 and mash out...

I just harvested about 12 lbs of fuggles and after I started drying them I have a ton of aphids that decided to come out. Is there anyway to get rid of the aphids safely or is this harvest ruined?

    harvesting hops

I live in northwest washington, near bellingham and I was wondering how I know when my hops are ready to be harvested and dried. I inherited two very large/mature plants with a lot of hops of them, but have never harvested hops before. When do people in the nw normally begin harvesting?

    CO2 Regulator Options

I am looking to get started in kegging and was hoping to get some opinions on CO2 regulators. I was looking at a triple gauge - 2 product/2 pressure regulator that I can get for about $90, but I am not sure that I need it. First partial mash, looking for tips

I completed my first partial mash yesterday, an oatmeal stout, and hit about 60% efficiency. I started by heating 2 gallons of strike water to 160*F then added 2.5 lbs of 2Row and 1lb of flaked oats in a large grain bag and stirring the mash for a couple minutes to get a good mix. I wrapped my...

    Citra hops

Does anyone know where I can buy citra hops, or alternatively, if there is any reasonably close substitute? Every place I have looked, locally and online, either doesn't carry citra or is sold out. From what I have read citra is a difficult hop to sub for because it has a unique profile. HELP!

    Question about grain names

I have a recipe that calls for British Crystal (75L). Am I correct in assuming that this would be caramunich? I found 80L caramunich at LHBS, so I am hoping I can go with that.

How much base malt do I need?

If I am going to do a partial mash with 1lb of flaked oats how much 2 row would I need. I will also be using 1lb of chocolate malt, 1lb crystal malt 60L, and 1/4lb of roasted barley. Is 1 or 2 lbs of 2row sufficient?

    WYeast Smack Packs

I was at my LHBS over the weekend and found out that they have Rogue Pacman yeast available for a short time. My only hesitation was that the smack packs looked puffed up a little, and I didnt want to waste my time and money on yeast that may be no good. Can anyone tell me if the yeast is likely...

    specialty grain substitution

I am a new brewer and have very limited experience with specialty grains. I am looking at a few different recipes that I want to brew over the next month and each calls for crystal malt but at different color/flavor intensity. Can I buy bulk 40L crystal, which seems to be most common in the...

    Straining wort

What is the best way to strain your wort after cooling and transfering to your fermenter? I have done about 7 batches now and have been using the large white screened funnel that comes with most beginning brewers equipment kits and I have been having a lot of difficulty getting the wort to flow...

I am looking for a good recipe for an oatmeal stout, but I have not yet graduated to all grain brewing. Does anyone have a good extract version of an oatmeal stout, or suggestions as to the best/easiest way for me to make this based on my limited experience? Thanks!

Hey everyone, I am a new homebrewer from the Skagit Valley, a little over an hour north of Seattle, and I am really looking forward to sharing some ideas and getting some great advice on here.
