    Argggg! Over carbonated AGAIN!

Ok this is getting silly, This is the third beer that I've made that was over carbonated (Only this time the beer itself is bad too) I just made this recipe http://hopville.com/recipe/1645084 gave it 3 weeks to ferment, hit target FG, bottled with the appropriate amount of priming sugar (5oz for...

How to get rid of all the sediment on the bottom of the bottle? Does racking help?

Question is in the title. I understand that bottle conditioned beers are going to have yeast on the bottom but it seems like a lot of my beers seem to have TONS of sediment. Would racking to a secondary help with this? Thanks! Jon

Will this work to crush my grains?

Hey guys, Do you have any idea if this would work to crush grain for brewing? http://www.blendtec.com/products/view/kitchen_mill It's my wives and I just saw it sitting on the counter...She used it to make flour but it looks like there are some settings for coarseness. I'm just hoping to buy...

Just tried Anchor Steam (I think) WOW is this really Anchor Steam?

Hey guys, I was at a restaurant and I ordered an Anchor Steam because I had never had it before. From what I read Steam beers are ales but generally taste more like a lager. I had heard about Anchor Steam a lot and had the idea in my head that it was just more of a mass produced, popular plain...

If you cold crash can you bottle ferment?

This is probably a stupid noob question but can you bottle ferment a cold crashed beer? I'm just wondering if there will be enough yeast to eat the priming sugar. Or is cold crashing only meant for force carbonated beers? Thanks

Optimal hoppiness - should I add DME late in the boil?

So me and some friends are brewing a hop bomb today. Ive heard a larger boil is better for that because the wort retains more bitterness when there is less sugar in it.. is that true and if so should i add my DME and sr in lte in the boil? How late? Thanks!

Hopville FG calculations seem to be really high.

Hey guys, have you noticed that the Hopville FG calculations seem to be too high? I was messing around and the numbers didn't seem to add up.. here are some examples http://hopville.com/recipe/1287336/imperial-ipa-recipes/357-magnum it's showing 1.027 for a FG but that seems really really...

Working on a hop bomb recipe, looking for advice & critiques.

Hey guys I'm very new to brewing and am trying to come up with a recipe for a hop bomb ale. The idea for this is to have a crisp hop bomb IPA/Pale ale without a whole lot of malt characteristics so the hops can really shine through. Let me know what you think (Especially the hop schedule...

What exactly does "Put in at 0 minutes" mean?

As far as hop scheduling, you will see recipes say "put in at 0 min" Maybe this is a stupid question but...What exactly does this mean? I know it means throw them in at flameoff but how long do you leave them in? Do you put them in and leave them in the wort until its cooled, then remove...

Looking for suggestion on a good hop to grow.

Hey Guys, I've read that when you grow your own hops, the whole leaves that you get are better for dry hopping and flavor additives rather than bitterness. I guess because it's hard to know exactly how bitter homegrown hops will be? Anyway, I'm just looking for a good versatile hop to grow. I...

Question about adding various types of sugar to beer.

I've read you shouldn't generally add more than a pound of sugar to a beer or you could get some bad tastes.... Although I've brewed a Belgian tripel that called for 2 lbs of beet sugar so I guess it's more of a ratio to the amount of malt that you have kinda thing. I am unfortunately not good...

Looking for Food Safe materials for Mash Ton.

I am planning on making a Mash Tun and have seen quite a few DIY Mash Tun videos & posts... The problem is no one seems to mention the safety of the materials used in the DIY project. I've heard many of the Home Depot & Lowes parts are not food safe. I've read the metal "mesh" thats normally...

Looking for a fruity more novelty style beer

I'm going to the beach in a few months and I'd like to have some kind of fruity type light novelty beer. And before you make fun of me, this is IN ADDITION to some IPA's and a Belgian Tripel so this is just to throw something ineresting, light and fruity into the mix and also just because I like...

I'm making a 3.5+ Liter starter so I was just planning on placing it in my big 6+ gallon plastic fermentation bucket. Is this a nono?

Is the MrMalty Calculator Accurate When Dealing With HG Yeast?

Title says it all... The calculator doesn't have anywhere to display whether the yeast strain is high gravity or not. I'm currently trying to calculate a starter for 3787 TRAPPIST HG yeast. Does the fact that it's HG not have anything to do with the required cells? Whats the diference between...

Is it fine to pull Malt extract from my "recipe" when making a starter?

Might be a stupid question.. Forgive me But I need to make a starter and don't have any extra malt extract. The beer I'm brewing has malt extract in it so can I just "steal" it from that? I'm planning on pitching the whole starter in so I would imagine it wouldn't be an issue...Just not sure if...

Ok, I'm getting ready to brew my second brew and I'm trying to make sure I don't screw anything up because I spent a lot of money on this Belgian Tripel kit, haha! (my first brew is currently stalled at 1.02 which is part of my worries) This is the kit that I'm talking about...
