    Happy Stout Day!!!

Did not realize it was International Stout Day, but I am on my second, and last, stout for the evening. The first was a 12 oz. bottle of Yooper's oatmeal Stout and the the one I am currently drinking is a 22 oz bomber (10% ABV) based on Stone's Russian Imperial Stout recipe from BYO magazine. It...

How much do you pay for grain at your LHBS?

$30 for 50 pounds of 2-row or 60 cents a pound when buying by the sack. It was $28.50 not too long ago. I think they also sell it by the tenth of a pound for 80 cents a pound.

Is Cold Crashing Necessary If Kegging?

You don't need to cold crash at all. It helps clear beer faster, but beer will clear quite well in a refrigerated keg in a week or so.

What are you doing instead of brewing this weekend?

I was going to brew today, but now I will be shopping for a new propane regulator. I was up early and went to light the burner at 5:30 a.m. Nope, broken regulator.

    Pale Ale Fermentation question

I think you are talking about cold crashing. It helps clear the beer by causing yeast and other particulates to fall out of suspension. It's not necessary, but helpful if you have the fridge/keezer space to do it.

    Keg won't seal

In addition to trying lube make sure you are pulling up on the lid while hitting it with the gas so it seals before you lock it down. You may have to hit it with 20 or 30 psi initially to seal it and then you can turn it down. Also on some kegs the lid seals better if you rotate the lid 180...

What I did for beer today

Bought three pounds of whole hops (one each of Cascade, Centennial, and Magnum). Seller is clearing out room for the 2013 crop so 2012 hops are on sale.

    Dogs

Thanks. That cracked me up. I have a 12 1/2 year-old Australian Cattle Dog/German Shepard Dog mix who still does that, although not quite like he use to. When he was younger and we wanted a break after hours of fetch, we used to gather up all of his toys and put them in a room and close the door...

Finally bottled my 5 1/2 month-old RIS; weighed out and milled grains for a batch of ESB I hope to brew tomorrow; weighed out the hops for the same.

Input: buying either cereal killer or barley crusher tonight

There are a lot of threads on HBT comparing mills. Some are listed on the bottom of this page under "similar threads." Both of those mills have the same length and diameter rollers, but with the cereal killer you only get a 6 month warranty. I have read that the BC warranty is lifetime, but you...

What do you want to see in a nanobrewery commercial?

Whenever I see a "craft" beer commercial my first thought is which one of the big boys (InBev, etc.) owns that "craft" brewery. I am not a BMC hater, but unless the commercial makes it clear that the brewery is truly locally owned I am going to assume it is owned by InBev, SABMiller, or some...
