    Anyone brewed with cane syrup?

Bringing this old post back to life. Does anyone have any recipes that specifically call for cane sugar? Or suggestions on what I could brew with it? I just picked up a small bottle of "Almost Rum". A local distiller makes it. They say its the same stuff they use in their mash when making...

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

21st Amendment "hell or high watermellon". Tasted like vinegar with dish soap in it. I like everything else from this brewery, but they missed the mark with this one

Anyone use Garlic Barrier or Neem Oil on hops?

Thanks for the responses. I'm new to growing hops AND new to organic gardening in general. We'll see how it goes. I have some additional rhizomes planted in containers here at home. It will be interesting to see how the organic hops do, compared to the non-organic.

Anyone use Garlic Barrier or Neem Oil on hops?

I planted two rhizomes in an organic community garden this spring. Now that they're in the ground, I'm wondering what I should do to protect them from pests. Being organic - normal pesticides are a no-no. Other members of the community garden are talking about using nematodes or...

    Planting rhizomes in the wild?

Slight change of plans. I hoped to plant the wild rhizomes when I went home for Easter. Thanks to the super-late shipping from Northern Brewer, I didnt get my rhizomes until just last week. I planted two in containers at my place (as planned). The two that were supposed to go to the farm...

    How often do you mix??

I just tried mixing beers last week. Mixed half a bottle of my raspberry chocolate stout with half a bottle of a friend's russian imperial stout. Mine had WAY too much raspberry, and his RIS was a little green (only a month old). But together they were amazing!

Flanders Red or Brown - leave on yeast?

Sorry for the delayed response. Here’s the recipe I used. This is a Flanders Red recipe, adapted from a guy in my local brew club. His volumes were much more specific. I rounded mine up/down to the nearest half pound (cause I’m lazy). Where his recipe called for pale wheat, I subbed in...

    Found a beer treasure

I don't know. There's a reason this friend kept them all these years. Time does interesting things to beer. Some of them (as you're discovering) were never meant to be kept this long. But some of them are probably better now than when they were fresh. I would be curious to hear what some...

Peanut Butter Porter W/Powdered Peanut Butter

Awesome. Funny though... I had the opposite experience. Not enough PB flavor, and too much foam. The choco PB stout recipe had a pound of flaked oats, and i added some flaked wheat as well. I have to let it sit for a few minutes after i pour, to let the head die down. Didnt get as much PB...

Flanders Red or Brown - leave on yeast?

I just did my first Flanders last weekend. Pitched some Us-05 along with my roesalare. Going to rack after 7 days and then let it sit for as long as I can stand to wait. I've read others had good results doing it this way. Also read that you have to be careful with oxygen exposure, as oxygen...

    Primary vs Secondary yeast cake?

I've heard people talk about saving their yeast cake from sour beers and pitching another batch on top of it. Just wondering if that's the primary or secondary cake? I have a batch of Flanders Red (my first sour) in primary right now. I pitched Roesalare and a pack of US-05 at the same...

    Found a beer treasure

This is a ridiculous story. A beer-lovers dream! Thanks for the additional pics! Please keep them coming. I really wish I had a basement or a cellar. I'd love to pick up a few bottles of my favorite beers - especially the sour ones - and forget about them for 25+ years.

    only bottleing 4.5 gals!!!!!

You could reduce to 4.5oz of priming sugar if you wanted to be precise about it. Probably not a big deal though, at 4.5 gallons. I rarely get a full 5gallons of finished beer out of a 5gallon recipe, but as long as Im within a half gallon I usually use the full 5oz of priming sugar. If I'm...

    Found a beer treasure

Where do you live, and what time are you least likely to be home during the day? :D Just kidding. Seriously awesome find though. You must have some awesome friends, to receive such a gift! Where did they come from? They look like they were cellared somewhere. If you would like to continue...

11%ABV Abbey Ale wont carb up, any suggestions

I had the same problem with a Belgian Strong recently. It's just over 10% ABV, and I let it sit in secondary for a month before I bottled. Sat for almost 2 months in my closet and did not carbonate. I got so frustrated I poured half the batch out (doh!) Fortunately, I stopped myself before...

You want to brew in WHAT!?!?!?

How about the AquaDom in Berlin? 260,000+ gallon cylindrical aquarium with an elevator in the middle. Or am I the only one who enjoys the thought of scuba diving in an aquarium full of actively-fermenting beer? (after diving in a pool of santizer for a few minutes, of course)...

    What Now?

All 3 seasons of the Mighty Boosh (available on youtube). - People only seem to know this show because of the Old Gregg clip from season 3, but the entire series is hilarious.

    Planting rhizomes in the wild?

No worries. I have a handtruck. I get what you mean though. My 10gallon mash tun full of water is heavy enough. I'd hate to try to move a 25gallon barrel full of dirt, without some mechanical assistance. Standard fencing - not barbed. In some places there is a top row of barbed wire...
