Pitching a Barleywine on a Yeast Cake

Hi All I have been reading about pitching onto a yeast cake and am looking for a bit of advice. I currently have a "kitchen sink" IPA in the fermenter- just a hodge podge of stuff I had on hand. I used Wyeast 1272. The OG was 1.070 and it's supposed to hit 1.015. My first question is, can...

How many years do hop plants produce?

I'm wondering how long a hop plant will produce and when it peaks. I have read that it establishes itself in 3-5 years. When does production start to decline? Thanks!

Feedback on a black ipa recipe

Hi Everyone I'm looking for feedback on this Black IPA recipe. I have never brewed a dark beer and am not sure how this will taste. I'm definitely looking for a "smooth" malt profile with decent hop flavor. (Isn't everyone?) Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated. On a side note: I am...

Fort George Next Adventure Black IPA Clone

I would like to know if anyone out there has any info about Fort George Brewery's Next Adventure Black IPA. It's a seasonal brew that came out this past fall. I can't find any stats (IBU's SRM, Gravity, etc.) although their site lists ingredients. The ABV is 6.2%. Organic 2 Row Malt Munich...

How many points does priming sugar add?

I made a couple of mistakes as I prepared to bottle my most recent batch. First, I neglected to take a hydrometer reading before adding priming sugar. My target FG was 1.017 but I hit 1.020 with the sugar. How much of this variance can be attributed to the corn sugar? Second, I...

Hops are up sooner than expected...

This is the second year I've had hops growing but my first spring. Last year I cut them back, covered them with a mulch of leaves and then put a tarp over the raised bed (mainly to prevent the leaves from blowing away). Yesterday I noticed one of the bines climbing out from the edge of the...

Looking for a clone recipe for Detour DIPA from Uinta Brewing

I am looking for any info about Uinta Brewing's Detour DIPA. It's super good but there website says very little. So does a search of HBT. I'd like to make something similar. Here's what I know. (From the site.) "Detour blazes the trail for fresh and bold Double IPAs. Four varieties of hops...

No Activity in Yeast Starter- Looking for Advice

About 30 hours ago I made a 1.5 liter starter from a vial of White Labs WLP002 English Ale Yeast. I oxygenated it with a stone. When I pitched the wort was about 74 degrees. The starter has sat in my kitchen where the temp is about 70-71 degrees. The vial says the production date was 2/6/13...

    Red Chair NWPA Clone

I know there are a few threads about this beer already but I have yet to find one where anyone says "This is it! This is as close as it gets!" Does anyone have a tried and true recipe? Or a link to a successful recipe? Here is what Deschutes website says. Note that they say the temps, times and...

    Fermentation Temps

I just finished brewing my first all grain batch (Yooper's Ruination Clone). It's in the fermentation chamber I built so I can control temps pretty effectively. The fermometer strip on the side of the glass carboy say it's 66 but the temp controller is set for 62. The fridge is NOT running...

Should I attempt to oxygenate again?

I finished brewing an all grain batch about 3 hours ago. It was the first time I attempted a yeast starter and the first time I oxygenated using an oxygen stone. Everything went well but after I cleaned up I read that I should have run the oxygen for 1-2 minutes. I only ran it for about 45...

Yeast starter- how long before it's ready?

I am planning to brew on Thursday (in about 48 hours). The soonest I can make a starter is tonight (about 36 hours before brewing). Is that enough time before pitching for the yeast to do their thing? It's a bigger beer with an OG of 1.077.

12" False Bottom in an Igloo Cooler

So, I'm about to order a 12" false bottom for my 10 gallon Igloo cooler when I decide to take a quick measurement of it's diameter and suddenly became concerned about the clearance under the bulk head of the ball valve. It looks to be about 3/4". Most of the instructions for converting beverage...

Water ph in first all grain batch...

I'm planning on doing my first all grain batch next month and I've been reading up on water chemistry. Although I know there is more to water chemistry than ph, that's what I've been concerning myself with so far. In the past I've made extract beers with steeping grains with bottled water. I...

    What size False Bottom?

I have ordered an Igloo Beverage Jug - Orange and White, 10-Gallon. I want to order a false bottom for it as well. The problem is that every place I look to order one shows it fitting a Rubbermaid cooler. I assume they are about the same size but I'd hate to order it and have it not fit. If...

Can Someone Explain these Brew Pot Dimensions?

I am hoping someone can clarify the dimensions of a 10 gallon stainless steel Winware brand brew pot. Amazon has the size listed as 21 x 16.8 x 14.2 inches. I'm not sure what these dimensions indicate. 21" tall, 14.2" diameter and 16.8" handle to handle? Any ideas? I plan to buy one but want...

    Lowering FG in a recipe

Hi all! I have a general recipe question. What changes can be made to a recipe to lower the final gravity? Obviously, yeast attenuation will play a role as will mash temp. Are there other ways? Can changes to a recipe affect the outcome?
