Low Attenuation (S-05) in Milk Porter

Hello all. I recently got back into brewing and after a few batches went to make a milk porter based on a beer I had at a brewery in NC. They were willing to share the grain ingredients with rough notes but no exact amounts, so that part was up to me. Ingredients: Here is the Beersmith info...

    Stuck Cider fermentation?

Dropped 1 lb of brown sugar into 5g of store bought cider and pitched a vial of White Labs Cider yeast at 68F. It's been 1.5 weeks and I'm down to about 1.028. This normal? I thought Cider was a fast fermenter.

Sweet, sparkling cider with a keg

Hi all... I'd like to try to make a pumpkin/apple cider for the fall. My wife and I both like a sweet cider, and I plan on kegging this one. Is there a way to stop fermentation of a 5 gallon batch at around 1.020? I can keg carbonate but I don't want a super day cider. My understanding is that...

    Good price for Perlicks?

I've been searching around and looking for sales etc but prices seem to vary and I'm honestly not sure what would be a "good price" for perlick faucet + shank. Don't necessarily need stainless, chrome is fine. What have you guys gotten them for?

Christmas Ale Clone for my Wife Recipe Help

Hey everyone. Quick backstory: My now-wife lived in the Fairfax, VA area for the past few years and became a huge fan of a brewpub called Sweetwater's Tavern (they have a couple locations), and especially their annual "Happy Trails Christmas Ale". It's a really good beer that she misses...

    Oak Aged Stout "Strategy"

One of my homebrewing buddies recently moved away for work, but just found out he's coming back for a few weeks at the end of August. He'll be back again April/May of 2013 so we've decided to brew a nice imperial stout while he's here at the end of the month to drink at the end of his return in...

    Using malted milk

I've seen a few posts that say malted milk is just DME + powdered milk, is that true? I'd really like to make a stout with that distinct malted milk shake flavor. Is there a different way to simulate that?

    Cricket Bat as Mash Paddle?

My homebrew buddy brought me back a cricket paddle from India and I was wondering if I could use it as a mash paddle. It says "made from the finest willow" but he said it was the cheapest he could get. It's got some stickers on it so I figured I could lacquer it so they'd stay there. Any...

The Complete Joys of (Bulk) Homebrewing

So I decided recently that it would be more cost effective to buy my DME in bulk, and sprung for a 50lb back of golden light DME that I could use as a base. I came in a big brown bag, and today I finally decided to cut it open and use my food saver to break it down into small pieces. What I...

Leak in Gas In Line at Oetiker Clamp

I tried using the googles but everything that popped up said that oetiker clamps don't leak:drunk: I had a leak-free set up when I went on a business trip for 5 days. Came back and got my beer into the keg and then when I grab the exact same hose w/ QD that has been sitting in the kegerator...

Poppet keeps getting plugged - Options?

Tried searching around but either I'm searching wrong or I can't find something similar. Today has been an exercise in patience when it comes to kegging took forever to get to the point where I could pour a pint and then this... I naturally carbonated in my keg while I waited to receive and...

Ebay Temp Controller Amp Rating w/ my Freezer

Hey all, Just finished building my temperature controller using MisplaceCanuck's build here. The controller is rated for 10A. I just read the instruction manual for my Magic Chef 5.1 freezer that says to use a power source rated for 15A, but the sticker on the back has listed a current of...

Beersmith 2.1 and Late Extract Additions

When I check the "late extract addition" in Beersmith, and tell it to add it after the boil, Beersmith seems to think I'm adding my malt extract with the yeast. On the report pages, it's adding 5 lbs of DME after the wort is cooled and the yeast is pitched. If I tell it not to do after the...

Do all grain mash adjuncts go into steeping water for extract?

Hi all, If an all grain recipe calls for adding things like spices, crackers, etc in the mash for all grain, do I put them in my steeping grain bag? Water? Boil? And same proportions for the most part?

    Apollo - Sixpoint Brewey

I just had this for the first time, it's a very lightly soured wheat. Not a fan of most wheats and I can't stand sour beers but somehow this one grew on me as I drank it. Anyone else try it?

    Happiness is...

For me, it's this: Three are mine and one is a friends first non-Mr beer kit that he's fermenting in my basement :)

    Infection?

Lot of firsts for me here. First wheat, first liquid yeast, first 3g batch, etc... 13 days in primary at basement temp (63) and it looks like this. OG: 1.040, gravity reading right now is 1.010. Hasn't bubbled in a while but it's 3g batch in a 5g bucket. Yeast is WL400. It's BierMuncher's...

Natural Carb keg while I wait for temp controller?

Hey all, I'm getting a chest freezer this week but my temp controller isn't due to arrive until early to mid June. I'm thinking about kegging a beer I have next weekend with priming sugar. Should be about two to three weeks before the keezer is operational after that. Would I just set to...

    Kegging without a kegerator?

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about jumping into kegging, and I find a good deal but won't have the ability to do a kegerator for a while. My basement sits at 60...what kind of challenges am I looking at? I don't mind using frosty mugs and having sightly warm beer, and using ice buckets for...

Commercial Brewing vs Homebrewing Conditioning Time

Hi all, I finally went on my first brewery tour post homebrew addiction, and was very excited to get a bunch of questions answered that I'd never thought to ask. Unfortunately, our tour guide had only been brewing for 4 months and had never homebrewed before so was not able to answer many of...
