    Splitting brew day?

Okay, I finally relented to the fact that if I'm ever going to brew, I'm going to have to split it into two sessions, with a 6 to 7 hour window in between. It's a simple blonde recipe, all grain. The question is where to end the first session. The two options are to let it mash for those seven...

    First BIAB

Howdy Folks. After a lot of trolling on this site and a year since I've last brewed anything, I decided to try my first BIAB and let me tell you - I am SOLD. I couldn't believe how simple this is compared to a full out all grain brewing session. Anyone want to buy a mash tun?? Haha I brewed...

    Possible infection?

Howdy folks. I rarely post on this forum but I do log on most every day and read what I can. I recently taken up homebrewing again after a few year hiatus. Before my hiatus I have brewed dozens of beers, both extract and all grain and have never had a problem. When I decided to start brewing...

    Yeast Viability after bottling

I was wondering how long yeast would remain viable after a beer is carbonated. Say if you opened a fully carbonated beer and let it go flat, then you added some sugar in there and recapped, would it recarbonate again? Taking it a step further, could you grab a commercial beer and do the same...

Beer stuff for sale on Craigslist

I was cruising craigslist today and found this - * Price Reduced * Beer Dispensing Equipment To be honest, I don't know what half this stuff is, but seems like it would be worth the $125 if there is a practical use for it.

    Finally back in the saddle

Used to be an avid brewer and poster/lurker here a couple years ago but quit both while trying to finish my basement. Well the basement is finally done and my reward is finally get to brew again. Did an extract brown ale 3 weeks ago to get my feet wet again but already planning my next brew day...

Is it possible to beef up the burner?

My crappy LP burner now can barely boil 6.5 gallons, by barely I mean sometimes it doesn't even look like it's boiling. Is there something I can do, like buy a different regulator, that can get a little more juice out of this thing. I've played with the air restrictor and it seems that wide open...

    Second AG completed.....

And my efficiency went from 61% to 84%....whoop whoop!! Better crush, 1/2 gallon extra sparge water and slower sparge (not sure if this contributed or not), other than that, everything else was the same as the first time...:mug: Thanks for the help.

    Noob question on Sparging

I've done one AG so far using Bobby_M AG Primer (Thanks Bobby). I used his No mash out double batch sparge method. As I was doing this I was thinking of any other ways that would work for sparging and started wondering. What if you put all your grain in a big grain bag and mashed it at a fairly...

    Possible infection?

6 weeks ago I brewed AHS Canadian Ale, it was my first full boil. It was a surprise opportunity to brew so I didn't do a starter for my wyeast smack pack. I pitched it as is and after 72 hours or so, still no activity so I repitched with some nottingham I had on standby. It fermented out very...

    2 questions on AG

Firstly, (I know...:cross:), Once you let your initial mash set for 60 minutes, are you are supposed to stir it before you vorlauf? Secondly, When you are batch sparging, you stir in the water but do you have to let it set for a while before starting the vorlauf? Thanks again.

    Honeywell Temp Controller wiring

I just bought a honeywell T6031A 1029 temperature controller off of ebay in my first step toward lagering. It's brand new in the box but the downfall is that I have to wire it myself. Opening up the inside I see 3 screws - one for red, one for black and one for white. The limited info I could...

How do I know if my starter fermented?

Long story short, I made a starter last night for my newcastle clone I'm brewing tonight, it was a Wyeast Brit ale - pitched into the starter without smacking. I never got a chance to check it this morning but at noon today there was a tiny bit of froth at the top (2 pieces about a quarter size...

    Help me diagnose Chill Haze

Hey all, I've been getting a problem with chill haze in my beer. Two of my extract batches are drinkable now but as soon as I put them in the fridge, they cloud up. Very frustrating since they are very clear before they go in there. While making the wort, I use a wort chiller and actually can...

    Lagering Feasibility

I'd love to brew a bock beer. Right now I have a beer fridge that I keep my keg setup, plus bottled homebrew in. Would it be possible to ferment & lager in that same fridge as well while keeping the other goodies in there?

    Making a starter

I've been doing a lot of reading the past few days about making a starter. I want to give it a try with a Hefe Weizen I'm going to do this week. I already purchased the kit with Wyeast Activator. Everything I read here says to make your starter out of DME. A few questions - 1) Can I use the...

    Keg Pressure

Just recently received my new keg setup from Midwest Supplies. Last night I transferred my brown ale into the keg and as per their instructions - set the regulator at 40 psi. Now an hour later I went down to the basement and noticed that the regulator was down to about 33 psi. This doesn't seem...

    Is it normal?

When I put a beer in the fridge (it's only 10 days in the bottle), it seems to take all the sediment off the bottom and cloud it up. It's clear as apple juice before I put it in - 4 hours later its as cloudy as the first day I brewed. I understand that the beer is not done but being that this is...

    Hot Steeping

I'm about to try my second batch (first one being a canned extract, currently in the secondary) and want to try steeping specialty grains. The whole process seems simple enough, the only question I seem to have is the amount of time to steep the grains. Most directions say things like 15-30...

Another "I just brewed my first beer" thread.

Yep, another newbie here, 3 days into my first batch. I brewed on friday night - I decided something really simple for my first one - coopers draught. Everything went good except I accidently broke my hydrometer on my basement floor so I didn't get an OG. Live and learn I guess. I was also...
