    Miller fortune ad campaign

Sorry I was going by taste not nomenclature. If you grain bill is all barley malt then it will have a "scotch" taste when distilled. Mostly corn mashes are where whiskey comes from, then depending on who makes it it can have rye or wheat in it also.

*sigh* I make all 3 types of alcohol regularly. Beer, wine and the other thing we don't talk about here. I caught that too and I was as dumbfounded as any of you. And also whiskey is NOT "distilled beer". You don't want to be distilling anything with hops in it. Also the grain bill for your...

Share us your DUMBEST brewing experience...

Just had one. Like Facinerous I seem to find a new way to screw up every brew cycle. Anyway I just started fly sparging and love it. Its a ghetto setup but works great. So after my mashing session is over I take my drill mounted stirring rod and give the mash a good stir before setting my grain...

    Water of Grain First

I made a stir rod for my drill, no dough balls here. Got me some mad stir action!

    Bored with session beers

Ironically I just had a Ruthless Rye last time we went out to eat. We both liked it but again my wife complained it could have been a little hoppier....lol......she's spoiled too. I might try Denny's Wry smile next time. Already got Mad Elf planned. My 10 gallon mash tun really opens up what...

    Bored with session beers

I think I ruined my taste buds. It seems now unless I'm drinking an IPA or some really wicked porter- I'm not that impressed. Right now i have two brown ales bottled, Caribou Slobber and a Surly Bender clone. Like the Surly better but it just seems bland to me. No off flavors, just bland. When I...

    :(

I have 5 glass carboys but I use them just to age wine and any longer term beer aging (my bourbon barrel porter is in one) However they never come out of the milk crate they are in unless they are empty and I'm cleaning them.

American IPA Bell's Two Hearted Ale Clone (close as they come)

Just gotta say, this recipe rocks!! Me and the wife got into IPA's last year and tried about 10-15 different Microbrews. This blows them all away. It has a very distinctive flavor, probably due to the All Centennial hops. I used Nottingham Ale yeast and got wicked attenuation (went from 1.070 to...

    Homebrew ROI?

Its a hobby so I really don't count the cost. Getting cheap, GOOD beer is just a benefit. When I was into building fast cars, wow talk about a negative ROI. I hunt alot and shoot 4 or 5 deer a year and if you count how much I spend to get them, its some expensive meat. It IS possible to...

What is up with Midwest and Northern Brewer

I just PM'ed him with this, I've actually seen Briess two row on sale there for cheaper. They had a special near christmas and it was $37/50lb. One thing tho if you let them grind it they REALLY grind it unlike other LHBS's. I do my own grinds I was getting too many stuck sparges. They are worth...

First time fly sparging- water calculations

Thanks bill and Yooper, I'm gonna do just that. I'm amazed how easy it was to fly sparge and the results were impressive. Yooper I used this one http://www.brew365.com/mash_sparge_water_calculator.php

First time fly sparging- water calculations

Just for fun I tried fly sparging this weekend. I normally batch sparge. My mash tun is a 10 gallon cooler, had a bazooka tube but I got nothing but stuck sparges. So I got a false bottom. Since i had the false bottom I thought I'd try some ghetto fly sparge. Took an extra 5 gallon mash tun and...

    Forgot my o2

Pitched the yeast already, I guess I'll see what happens. BTW after I cool the batch with my wort chiller I pour it in the fermenter thru a grain bag to get all the hot break and hops out. It gets alot of agitation that way.
