    BIAB without the Nylon Bag?

This is really good to know since I share OP's concern. So what about the type of hard plastic that's used in your typical beverage cooler?

    Mill Street Tankhouse Ale Recipe

I've actually had so much Tankhouse last year that I grew tired of it (although I can now say the same for Flying Monkey Hoptical Illusion). This is making me want to pick up a 6 for this weekend. Nice job crypt0 -- looks great! I'm gearing up to do my first all-grain, hopefully soon. This...

    Bottle conditioned IPAs...

I have my first IPA fermenting right now and I also bottle condition, so I'm in the same boat as you bovineblitz. I'm also using US-05 and I plan on dryhopping with 1.5 oz. My previous brew was a basic pale ale. I noticed that the hop flavour and bitterness was noticeably reduced when the...

Does this recipe need Carapils or no?

The first brew I made was very similar to this (1 lb of crystal and no carapils). It was slightly sweet and VERY tasty. If anything, I would even say there was too much body/head retention -- which is good if that's what you're going for. Plus I've read that hop biterness also adds to...

    Citra APA recipe feedback

Hey, how did this turn out? I'm planning my next brew which is going to be very similar to this (Magnum, Citra and Cascade). I've heard it's really easy to over-do it with Citra...

So I figured out why I'm not hitting my OG ...

The pail came from a friend who inherited it from his dad. So I'm not sure where it came from. He also lent me a glass carboy that I took some time to mark myself. The one brew I did in that turned out closer to what I expected. I should have known to double check for Imperial vs. US...

So I figured out why I'm not hitting my OG ...

This might turn into a rant so I apologize in advance. I'm an extract brewer doing partial boils. I've been using the markings on my plastic bucket to add water to reach 5 gallons. However I've always come a little under what I expected for gravity. I've only done 3 brews so far so I just...

    CaraAmber from Weyermann

Yeah, that's what I thought too. Then I see other comments like this: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/weyerman-caraamber-biscuit-question-rant-84154/ https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/cara-munich-160260/index2.html There's more than just those two, those are what I found with a quick search...

    CaraAmber from Weyermann

Does anyone have any experience using this malt? I've found so much conflicting info on it. Can I steep it (i.e. is it a "Crystal/Carmamel" malt) or does it need a mash? For now I'm stuck doing extract brewing. I wanted to try something new for a Pale Ale / Amber recipe. Any comments on...

    Thoughts on US-05 yeast

I've made my first 2 batches using US-05 (both pale ales). I've been enjoying the first for the past week or so and I'm about to bottle my second. I have a couple of observations and I'd like to hear some your thoughts. Flocculation. When I leave some bottles in the fridge for about a...

    Grassy taste

I brewed this about 3-4 weeks ago. The bottles just finished carbing up. I just dumped the pellets in the primary (no secondary at all) which was around 60F for the entire fermentation. Hmm, so it sounds like the grassy tastes are in fact mostly from the dry hopping. Lesson learned. I've...

    Grassy taste

I did some searching but I couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for. My first real batch (where I did a boil) came out with a very strong grassy taste. I think it's because I got A LOT of hop material in the fermentor from my kettle. I did do a bit of dryhopping, and from what I've read...

    Flying Monkeys Hoptical Illusion

Ruskali, thanks for the info. Hopefully in a couple of batches I can do, at least, a partial mash and try this out. I also just realized that wfeddern's post mentioned "roasted" barley, not flaked barley. Good luck with your Smashbomb; be sure to post your results on how it turns out!

Can "Mash Hops" hops addition go in at extract?

Is this the same thing as First Wort Hopping (FWH)? If so I was wondering the same thing myself. To say it another way, if the hops were steeped along with the specialty grains (for extract brews) would it have the same effect as adding them during the sparge (for all-grain)?
