    Scorched BK elements using rye

Sorry in advance if already covered. I have been using a 4500 w LD element in my BK and NEVER had scorching issues until last batch which was all grain with ~28% malted rye. Has anyone had similar issues with rye malts? I should add that I did a 20 minute glucanase rest. Any thoughts would be...

    RIMS wizard and step mashing

Has anyone had any experience stepping up with a RIMS wizard? Seems it is good for maintaing temps (which I can do just fine with my current HERMS setup) but can it effectively raise mash temps in a reasonable amount of time?

    Fresh hops questions

I've always used store-bought hops but a friend has picked some centennial hops for me. Is it OK to dry in a plastic bag and then place in a freezer to store? Also, how do you know when the hops have suffciently dried? Is it sanitary for dry hopping? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hop Spider

I'm thinking of using one of these but am concerned the plastic paint strainer will not hold up to boiling temps. Any comments from those with experience would be appreciated.

    2000 watts v. 1700 watts for RIMS

Thanks for the info!!!! I think I will go with the 1700 to be safe and see if stepping is an issue.

    2000 watts v. 1700 watts for RIMS

Right. Is the 1700W powerful enough to step mash?

    2000 watts v. 1700 watts for RIMS

Rheem makes both a stainless 120V 2000W and a 1700W low density element. Any ideas on which one would be better for step mashing and preventing scorching with a RIMS tube having a 1.875" i.d. (or is there really no difference)

    Heating element umph!

Thanks - trying to find 1500w/120v incoloy that will fit in my rims tube. The one from Camco is a fold over and won't fit. Looks like I'll stick with the 1500/120 Ni/Cr. Thanks for the info!

Does RIMS 240V 1500 ulwd element run off 120 V have enough umph for step mashes (10 gal batches)?

    heating elements with zinc threads

I am fitting heating elements for my RIMS tube and noticed that the threads (even for the incoloy elements) for many of these elements is zinc plated carbon steel. Since zinc is considered toxic I was wondering if anyone has had a bad experience or similar concern. Any alternative elements out...
