The Homebrew Recipe Bible: Book Review

I bought the book when it first came out. Mostly for the recipes, but didn't brew any for a while. Over the last month I have brewed the Belgian IPA and the Rye IPA, both on tap now and seem like winners (though the Belgian IPA is my favorite). I did appreciate how he recommended a lower...

Best Way To Store Your Oxygen Stone

I rinse and starsan after use and let it air dry in the kitchen. I then loosely wrap in foil to keep dust and other nastiness of it and store it. I don't like the idea of storing in a plastic bag for the reasons others have mentioned. I probably should boil it every now and then, but it does get...

Brewing a Stout to age in a whiskey barrel, need some advice

Not 100% sure. Probably 1 or 2 months. I will be taking samples and pull it when I think I have the right flavor. Will then age in a keg a few more months. Will bottle off of the keg. Crossing my fingers nothing gets infected in the barrel. I did give it a soak with ~170 water for a couple...

Brewing a Stout to age in a whiskey barrel, need some advice

An update the beer fermented and finished at 1.025 (for 11.5%). Nice roasted coffee flavor with a hint of chocolate. Let it sit on the yeast for 4 weeks. Transferred to my barrel yesterday. Now to wait.

WOW! All grain kits are expensive

My LHBS lets me buy 50lbs of 2-row for about $45. They give me a card and mark how much I have left. If I want a different base malt they will subtract the normal 2-row price ($1.20 I think) from the price giving me a discount of about $0.30. This is nice as I get the advantage of buying bulk...

What does homebrewtalk think about a wheat IPA with kolsch yeast?

Always open to more hops. I had bought a pound of nelson from my last IPA and have more than half of that left. I had centennial in the whirlpool. I can throw more nelson in this across the board. I also have a couple ounces of cascade I can drop in the whirlpool as well. I do like the idea of...

Simpson's Golden Promise In An IPA - Anyone Done It?

Looking back at my notes I used calcium chloride and gypsum in my water (I typically only add gypsum and blend my water 1:1 filtered tap and RO with small acid additions). pH was a bit high at 5.5 (normally shoot for something around 5.3) but still in a good range. So many variables. In the end...
