Broken Glass Carboy Horror Stories Compendium

Those things are junk. A lot of the glass carboys on the market these days are poorly made junk. Buy the older ones.

Some of us only have and use older glass carboys. I damn sure wouldn't trust any glass coming out of China. The old O-I stuff is remarkably durable, as is the older Mexican glass. They used to use those daily in office water coolers all over the country (1920s or so until the 70s or 80s) long...

I use the rubberized Therma-Fit gloves for handling glass. They grip better when wet, and give better dexterity under all conditions than thick welding gloves. If you are set on leather, get some TIG gloves with gauntlets. Something like these...

Now understand the draw of glass

IMO, the Mexican carboys from yesteryear are superior to current production Italian. The only thing better is US made glass like O-I.

Now understand the draw of glass

There have been a lot of issues with Chinese glass. Stick with US or Mexican.

I got free stuff from a family friend! Included an old extract kit...

If it doesn't have fuzz growing on it, it's still good. Get some fresh yeast and go for it.

Now understand the draw of glass

I love glass, hate plastic. I have, however, started packing my carboys around in milk crates. Just in case.

Anyone else annoyed with newer breweries using cans?

Good article. I avoided imports for a long time because they were always skunked.

Not surprising considering pressure is pressure, and it takes pressure to keep CO2 in solution. All else being equal, there isn't any more pressure in a bottle conditioned brew than there is in a force-carbed brew.

Glass bottles convey a greater image of quality, IMO. However, it would cool to see the craft brewers using aluminum screw-top "bottles" ala BMC.

If there's no ale leaking out, there's probably no air leaking in.

Big Mouth Bubblers are dangerously thin

The way his post read, I inferred that he meant ALL glass carboys. If I got that wrong, I apologize.

Big Mouth Bubblers are dangerously thin

I would be hard pressed to call a quality glass carboy a dangerous product. Talk like this leads to more BS laws and regulations.
