Good question, I had not settled on that yet. But, from the sounds of your comment, I'd probably not do large batches, and will stick with 1 gallon fermentation sizes. Perhaps I can concoct some makeshift herms system with a sous-vide to help.... hehe.
The plan is just to have a solid platform/foundation/control sample for experimenting and learning what various ingredients do/taste like. i.e. the 'base' being something like a breiss 2 row with minimum 60min hops. Then modify that base and see what flavors change, what it tastes like, etc...
I'm starting to play around conceptually with recipes and brewing beers to specific targets and flavor profiles, and I really couldn't find anything out there on the best way to go about isolating the taste of different malts. Looking for some input on how little I can get away with, hop...
Took a risk, while there was strong CO2 flow, and popped the 4 inch tri-clamp port at the very top off :D risky, but couldn't help myself, for the sake of science
IIRC, HotHead is a re-branded Voss variety.
I did a 10 gallon batch this weekend. Ended up with 11.5 gallons at ~1.065.
Bought one pack of HotHead, and initially intended to do a starter. It was ~3.5 months old.
I've read about this yeast and how it likes to be under pitched. I decided to not use a starter, and see what happens...
Just completed a 10 gallon all grain batch recipe using the "Hoppiness is an ipa" recipe from the "Brewing Classic Styles" book.
I have a 52 quart coleman rectangular cooler as my mash tun I got second hand. I replaced the mesh screen with a cpvc manifold, and created another manifold for...
That was the other one I was thinking of. Wasn't sure if i should start there or Voss.
Sounds like a good intro to kveik. I'll pick up some Omega HotHead for my next batch.
Thanks!
After getting tired of dealing with buckets in freezers and ice water to keep my fermentations cold (until i can get a diy gylcol chiller built), I've grown interested in kveik.
My main concern is trying to prevent variance due to yeast strains in recipes, and I'm looking for one that will have...
Eh, waiting made my decision for me. Couldn't get to the lhbs in time to get some more DME (used my last on my yeast starter). I feel better dumping and starting over as well, it seems. Thanks for the input!
I decided to try https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/threads/ode-to-arthur-irish-stout-guinness-clone.28239/ for my second all grain batch. I had most of the ingredients on hand, and am I big fan of stouts.
I also plan on taking half of it and turning it into a gingerbread stout utilizing a...
The price is more than 50% off the "new" price on morebeer.com[1]
As far as sizing, it was pretty clear this was 60L. If your target is for 5 gallon batches, there will be quite a bit of head space in these things, and you increase your risk of oxidization. There are more appropriate...
