Tough to get OG with all the foam!

This will get me run more firmly into beginnerville, or possibly kicked off this website for life...but it's Friday and I am feeling the effects of the first delicious stout I have yet to pour....So here goes: Forget the hydrometer. Mine is still in that nice little sleeve. I keep meaning...

The Good, the Bad, and the Ug-drinkable, And the Great!

I'd say we are in the same boat. All part of the learning curve, I guess. At least knowing there are many people making consistently good beer and getting their advice on this website gives us hope. It also provides an unexpected father-son or father-daughter activity that allows us to...

The Good, the Bad, and the Ug-drinkable, And the Great!

Thanks ChelisHubby. I was late for work after all that scribing, glad someone read it! It was good to get some of details down anyway, since I have not kept good notes.....But since I am batting about 50%, you'd better do twice as well on the brewing. The staying sober part would be a nice...

The Good, the Bad, and the Ug-drinkable, And the Great!

Hello from sunny warm NB Canada....what a difference a month makes! My first ever hop plants are even responding.... and there seems to be an evolution in my home-brew goals and standards. I had no idea where to post this...so it's here by default. I will gladly take direction on that as well...

If I could get any stupider. Killed my stout?

Just wanted to update this old thread of mine: The Coopers Stout that was overheated severely will not see August for the promised update. I am sad to say it's days on this earth are numbered. I have once again failed to keep a potentially great brew long enough to reach its peak. It was...

If I could get any stupider. Killed my stout?

Fusel Alcohol?. Perhaps that explains what happened to a batch of homemade rhubarb wine we made years ago. I figured we used to much sugar. It boiled away for a long time. at first taste it was very nice, but a weird alcohol taste I could have ignored, except, my face seemed to fell like it...

If I could get any stupider. Killed my stout?

Thanks guys, The guy at the brew shop said they have some Safale yeasts for the Festa kits. I'll see what he has and if he sells it separately. Or order it online I guess. My basement will be at good temps as things warm up here soon, probably between 60 and 65 until October. At that point...

If I could get any stupider. Killed my stout?

Yes Riot, I am using that yeast under the lid......Any direction there will be followed and appreciated. And I did find some dry malt extract, (light), in town.

I'll post a progress note in August.

If I could get any stupider. Killed my stout?

Hey thanks guys! Nice to get feedback so fast. I was so bummed out an hour ago. After a couple of brew and your replies.....I may live. Where there is beer, there is hope. I used the Coopers type yeast packet that came with it, and re-pitched with more of the same , but newer, when it...

If I could get any stupider. Killed my stout?

Hi guys. Great site, great forums, I have gleaned so much info here it's unbelievable......and I can't find a thread to answer this question, but I may not have searched well enough. I had a nice batch of Cooper's Stout on. Got too cold at the beginning, (under 65), no action whatsoever...

    The Sugar Shack

Sounds like fun. I kept waiting for your post to turn to the subject of using the the sap or the syrup in a brew vs sugars/fermentables. I have a maple in the yard with about 6 trunks growing up out of one. I have thought about tapping it, even bought a few taps and small buckets last...

new member from New Brunswick Canada

Did a bunch of Google searches and this website kept coming up. Compared to others, I find less bickering about techniques and mis-communications, and far more info and helpful advice for noobs like me who can barely open a can correctly. After reading a hundred posts and getting a wealth...

Pitching too cold then having to heat up?

I'll be curious to see how your brew comes out. This forum sure is a great source of info. I was about to start a thread to ask a similar question.... I am new to the forum, and pretty new to brewing, kits only so far. From what I read here, yours should be okay....and therefore...
