    Removing chloramine and inline sparging

So, I will try and keep this as brief as possible while providing good information. My system is configured as follows: 2 kegs. One as a MLT/strike water and the other as boil. I have two pumps, and recirculate with a RIMS tube. I have made good beer. It has largely been of the darker SRM...

RIMS: Can not sparge and mash. It's one or the other.

I had success this morning running a water test for mashing and sparging with the same PID values after: 1. Relocating temperature probe to the middle of the tube. 2. Changing my fresh water source to a lower flow spigot. 3. Placing a valve on the outlet of the RIMS tube. 4. Tinkering with the...

RIMS: Can not sparge and mash. It's one or the other.

OK, so there were several things wrong with my configuration that I have since discovered. 1. RTD Sensor was at the end of the tube, creating a lag in response times from the element to the sensor. I have flipped the outlet of the RIMS (and in turn the location of the temperature probe) to be...

    RIMS inline water heating question

I also apparently should have installed a ball valve on the RIMS outlet, to regulate the flow. i will be trying a butterfly valve as i am just fresh out of on-hand tri clamp ball valves. i was able to get the temperature on sparge between 161-169 by relocating the probe midway through the tube...

    RIMS inline water heating question

sounds like we are having the same exact problem, at the same time. My RIMS looks exactly like yours, except in tri-clamp form. Probe placement and in/outlets. we had a eureka moment this morning, and I am dying to test it out. WHAT IF I could reverse the outlet section of the tube so that the...

RIMS: Can not sparge and mash. It's one or the other.

It has come to my attention that the RIMS = vertical. This apparently does not work so well with sparging. Will be trying RIMS = horizontal this evening, and report my findings.

RIMS: Can not sparge and mash. It's one or the other.

It is RIMS. See linked picture. I have one PID controlling the RIMS tube, one PID as a glorified thermometer in the mash tun, and one PID controlling an element in the BK. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/163/indoor.jpg/

RIMS: Can not sparge and mash. It's one or the other.

Hello, So I have built myself an electric RIMS configuration. I'm using a 30amp Kal clone control panel built with the help of hbt user danbass. After going through my first batch, I was hit with some heating problems. It was suggested that I perform an auto tune so that the PID could...

Oxyclean and off taste and smell

I definitely do sanitize after oxy. I use MAYBE a tablespoon, fill keg up to 3/4 of the way.. shake it up, empty, and rinse. Then I add ~5gallons of starsan, empty that, and proceed to fill the keg with precious beer. I'm at a loss really - I made sure to get unscented oxiclean, and it doesn't...

Oxyclean and off taste and smell

I apologize if this has been asked before, but I am really struggling with this. I fear I have ruined two batches of kegged beer. I have started to use oxyclean to clean my kegs before filling them. (Prior I just used a water/scrub method and this had worked well, but I wanted to ensure I was...

Racked to Secondary - Pale ale turned Caramel?

I was siphoning from a bucket, so I guess that would make sense.

Racked to Secondary - Pale ale turned Caramel?

Hey folks, Did some searching around -- and couldn't find a similar experience with this.. I racked to my secondary for the first time yesterday and moved it to the basement. The brew was a darkish brown/copper color before I siphoned into the carboy, and after siphoning has turned...

    Unattended brewing - Airlock question

Thanks everyone. I didn't suspect it would be a great big deal as it will probably continue to push CO2 through the airlock during this time. I have to quit thinking about it. I have a friend who regularly home brews, and always thought it would be a fun hobby. I was actually looking for a...

    Unattended brewing - Airlock question

Hello, This is my first post here. I made my first batch on Tuesday the 9th, and woke up on the 10th to some solid bubbling in progress. I read somewhere that it is necessary to keep the airlock filled as it will evaporate over time. I will be leaving on Saturday the 13th and the brew will...
