    Hot Glue bottle wax experiment

Nice info, and good looking wax. That being said in my own tinkering I found that high of a glue ratio to be hell to get off come drinking time. It's pretty but I can't get through it with a bottle opener. For a more user friendly experience, I thinned it way down with paraffin. The finish isn't...

    Beer style advice

Thanks for the suggestions - I will have to follow up with him about something oak aged. I am not sure he's had much in the style. I know I could drum up a run of the mill brown ale, and that would probably be the most successful and appreciated at a party where not everyone is a beer geek...

    Beer style advice

I have a friend who is in Afghanistan for the next 6 months, and before he goes we want to brew something that will age well while he's gone that we can drink at his welcome home party in October. He loves: DIPAs (recently GLBC Alchemy Hour) Belgian Wits He likes: Brown Ales, but not...

    Stir Plate too powerful

Awesome, thanks for all the knowledge. I took Phys 1 in college but didn't stick around for Phys 2 (E&M at my school).

    Stir Plate too powerful

After some researching (which I wouldn't have been able to do without your explanation - thanks!) I have verified to myself that connecting the resistors in the fashion in which you describe will create a 100 ohm 2w resistor. Formulas also show that the 100 ohm resistor will drop the total...

    Stir Plate too powerful

Sounds like a lot of solutions, and I thank you guys for that. However I would hate to buy or cannibalize new gear, or order stuff on the internet like new fans or stir bars. I would much rather step down the power from the wall wort with an in line resistor IF that is possible. I'm hoping...

    Stir Plate too powerful

Interesting regarding the info on the stir bars. I read somewhere that the flat ones are better if you have a perfectly flat bottomed vessel, whereas the ringed are better if you have contour or convexity/concavity. I only did that research after the ringed bar was jumping off all the time...

    Stir Plate too powerful

80mm with a 1.5" stir bar, neodymium magnets spread roughly 1.5" apart hot glued to a spacer on the fan, as close as possible to the lid of the box.

    Stir Plate too powerful

So I made a Cigar box stir plate using commonly available directions. Components: Wall transformer outputting 12V @ 1000mA 25 Ohm Rheostat (speed control) Case fan - 1.8 Watts rated power @ 0.15A I am using a 1.5 inch stir bar - it was octagonal with a ring but I did my best to smooth out...

    Hot Glue bottle wax experiment

Updating the thread with my results. I was doing half batches using the following recipe: 6 crayons 3 - 10 inch 0.44 diameter hot glue sticks a little bit less than 1/4 lb paraffin (Gulf) wax I chopped it up, threw it into a tin soup can, and put it right on the glass top of my electric range...

    Hot Glue bottle wax experiment

Have you tried it yet? I have the same ingredients for the most part (down to the cheap a$$ crayons). I waxed a few of my bottles the other day using just the glue/crayon method originally posited (the 12 crayon to 20 glue stick ratio). Maybe I am being unrealistic but I am having one issue...

    Wort Chiller question

What type of solder is safe to use, and put into boiling liquid that you're going to consume?

    Wort Chiller question

Hey all, Built a wort chiller, but it seems... flimsy? Is that the right word? I used 3/8 OD copper, 50 ft. I'm concerned that I'm going to be clumsy and it's going to get mangled. I'd like to somehow join the coils together to create some stability. I'm not sure what the best way to go...

    Fermentation and blowoff

Not to hijack my own thread to a different topic here, but I'd rather do that than start a new thread. As I said before, I have brewed a few times, always extract, and it's time to move on to partial mash. The recipe has a number of grains, starting with a few pounds of 2 row. From there it...

    Fermentation and blowoff

Yeah I would like to make a starter. I ordered some extra DME, and I have time before my buddy and I get together to brew it. I just don't want to invest in a stir plate. I've looked into making one with a cigar box and a computer fan, but I must be the only person in the universe without a...
