I batch sparge and found this calculator to be very helpful.
http://brewheads.com/batch.php
I use a keggle and boil off about 1.5 gallons per hour.
So I make sure after I sparge to have an extra 1.5 gallons preboil.
This calculator is good for estimating what your preboil gravity...
So i brewed my 3rd all grain yesterday, Dude's Pliny the Bastid Recipe.
The problem is, after coming short on my projected efficiency and miscalculating my evaportion rate. My OG is only 1.062. I was shooting for 1.076. Im bummed.
So I stopped by my LHBS today and bought 2 lbs of extra...
ill have to agree with
-a keggle(with ballvalve and thermo)
-and a 70 qt coleman extreme(with ballvalve and bazooka screen or stainlessbraid)
-a decent burner
-a good thermomenter
and you're good to go!
thanks for your answers guys. Im just going to stick to my single sparge method for now. I was just worried about "hot side airation" because I catch my first runnings in a bucket. Time to look into buying a seperate HLT.
Hello, I'm new to all grain and I was hoping somebody could help me figure something out.
I've brewed all grain twice so far using this batch sparge method:
- mashed with a 1.25 quart per pound ratio for 60 minutes
- added enough sparge water to get to 168, waited 10 minutes...
