Acetobacter(?) bottle infection- at a complete loss

When I set out some years ago and had the same problem. I finally one day tried a side by side test of just how well i was cleaning my bottles.I'd always used washing up liquid and hot water and a bottle brush in the past however that day I left one of my bottles to soak overnight with...

A little help please with setting up my boil kettle/HLT for electric brewing .

Smokeymcbong and augidoggy, yes I can see the plus sides of both your suggestions .Having researched a little more I think an element of around 4000w would be best with a dimmer for better control and i wanted to avoid , making two many holes in my kettle, although for a future HLT set -up...

A little help please with setting up my boil kettle/HLT for electric brewing .

Hi, I am being forced to do away with my propane set up and I'm looking into how I can set up my 6 gallon aluminium boil/hot strike water pot to work using an element and some type of boil control .I wont be needing to worry about mash temps or pump systems just a way to heat up my strike...

    How to save money homebrewing

Every brew day, when the time comes to clean out my MLT I squeeze the bejesus out of the grain with a course muslin type bag and collect the wort (typically with an SG 0f 1020) I boil that down to 1040 and put it aside, also I save the wort sample which I used to take the OG , put them...

How to check SG without wasting too much brew?

I once made a very small batch of barley wine and didn't want to waste 250ml of fermenting beer on each SG check so I drew off (125ml) of wort and topped the rest up with plain water, took the SG and doubled the value. not sure if the science behind this was ok but it saved me beer !

Do you ever get tired of big beers?

After brewing beers mainly between 1050 and 1065 for the last few years I'm really enjoying my current phase of 1035-1040 bitters and milds, after a recent visit back home to uk, I wanted to mimic the bitters and milds I'd grown up with, the kind to pass an afternoon in a bar getting slowly...

    Brazilian Chopp Beer

Well my two centavos worth ..I'm an english guy living in São Paulo for the past ten years . It was the lack of decent examples of my beloved stouts, bitters and milds (I'm a Yorkshireman) that drove me to to embark upon this marvellous adventure we call homebrew. Thankfully now that's changing...

What I did for beer today

Made a blended Scottish 1728 \ Whitbread 1099 starter today nourished with a pint of imperial stout i took from the last batch as a SG sample and a little malt extract. Just woke up and am watching the foam bobbing around on the surface of my starter while sipping a coffee thinking Jaggery...

What I did for beer today

Blended a bitter with a pale ale because I needed the space\kegs and gave a good clean to the inside of my kegerator, oh and while I was at it I defrosted the feezer bit that holds frozen worts for starters etc. I had to transfer my washed yeast collection to my other 'food fridge' whilst I...

Do we have an abnormal fear of contamination?

I couldn't even use the 'off' beer to cook with the taste was so dam horrible. Yeah if it's good going to the secondary i figure the alcohol strong enough in there to ward off any nasties so i stop worrying, but by that i dont mean i take risks. and oh yes the racking cane and tubing are...

Do we have an abnormal fear of contamination?

I wouldn't say my fear is abnormal, and yes, I do have fear of losing a whole 5 gallons as, as happened 8 times in the past. Inicialy I lost quite a few to poorly cleaned bottles, spigot on fermenter and such like until i got my cleaning sytem dialed in and then after a couple of years I got...

Harvesting Yeast in Regular Jars rather than Mason Jars

I use any normal size jam jar or any conserve jar that as a screw top and have had no problems for at least 5 generations of yeast over the last year.
