New Brewer- 2nd Brew Today, 1/21/12

Hey Jeff, I had the same kit as you, and I've put this in one of your previous threads, but I guess you didn't see it: The BBS kit has great ingredients, but really really terrible instructions. They give a lot of really bad advice, and you'd do well to ignore some of it. In the kit they...

    Beers for warm fermentation

I guess I didn't realise what people meant by swamp coolers and thought they were way bigger setups. I keep my jugs in the closet at the moment, but when it starts to get warmer, I might try getting a bucket or cooler, and putting a jug in there and see how it does. Thanks!

    Beers for warm fermentation

I've got 2 batches of hefeweizen on the go right now, I'm hoping they become a TNT recipe because I do like wheat beer, but the banana thing... not so sure about. Hmmm

    Beers for warm fermentation

I'm only 3 batches of beer in, but I'm totally hooked :) I live in L.A. and I'm wondering what beers do best with warmer fermentation temps? I live by the sea, and my apartment usually stays cooler than outside (I don't have a/c) but it's still going to be in the 70's/80's for most of the...

How do YOU pass the time?

Since my first batch of beer, I've made a batch of ginger ale, root beer, dog biscuits and bread from the leftover grain, and I'm currently planning my next batch.

What do you brew for St. Patty's?

Patty is a woman's name, Irish people call the day St. Paddy's. (little pet peeve of mine :o ) I'm thinking of making a stout :)

ohhh that would be perfect. They didn't have any swing tops of any kind in the TJ's nearest to me, but I might try a few others if I'm passing them. Thanks for the tip!

    First Timer Question

I agree, no harm in being cautious, just saying not to write off the batch just yet :mug:

Cheap way to build up bottle collection for newbies like me!

I'm new to brewing, but since I started I've been keeping my eyes open for Grolsh in any supermarkets I've been in, and they never seem to have it! Does anyone know of any other beers/soda that come in flip-top bottles?

Dude, I'm a total noob too, so I mean it with affection, but you need to seriously take the best advice that anyone can give around here. Relax. Don't worry. Have a beer. (and soon you will be relaxing with your homebrew)

    First Timer Question

I had the exact same kit as you, and just bottled it this past weekend. Their kit has the terrible advice to mash uncovered, so it's really hard to maintain temps. At one point my mash got way hotter than it should have too. I don't have a hydrometer, so I don't know how much alcohol I ended...

Food safety of steeping bags, copper and solder

I've been worried to use non-food safe items too, so I've been using food-grade cheese cloth from the supermarket. You can get turkey stuffing bags from the dollar store too. It's not reuseable, but if you want reuseable, why not get the bags that are sold at the homebrew store. It might be a...

If they're still hard to remove after an overnight soak in oxyclean, steel wool is really good at getting all the gunk off.

    First Brew

I've heard of people using vodka too.
