    biab maximizing volume?

Nope, your boil time would remain the same. The only thing that would really be affected is your hop utilization, and even that is up for debate. You could do your mash, top up to ~4 gallons in your kettle (leaving room for expansion, etc). Do your boil, add to your fermenter and top off with...

    biab maximizing volume?

How big of a batch are you aiming for with that much grain? Is this a standard 5.5 gallon batch? With that pot, assuming you want to do a full boil, you may need to do 2 2.75 gallon batches, which would work ok in that pot. You could get away with boiling a concentrate and then topping off...

    Brewsmith cooling shrinkage with BIAB

I've actually sent an email off via their support form. I'll definitely report back!

    Brewsmith cooling shrinkage with BIAB

Exactly -- from what I can tell, it most certainly does, which makes sense as you're typically working with hot water from the start in a typical all-grain setup, vs filling full volume and THEN heating it.

    Squeezing BIAB vs steeped grains

This is great information. Thanks so much. While I have the smart guys' attention, could any of you give me some input on my other thread over here? :D

    Squeezing BIAB vs steeped grains

Hello, gang! I apologize if this has been discussed before. Why is it accepted to squeeze the grain bag with a BIAB brew, but not when you are steeping grains due to the risk of tannin extraction? The two processes are very similar, why is the tannin risk only with steeping?

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

Use the curtain from Walmart. $5 and you don't need to stitch it. Get some spring-clamps and use that to hold it in place around the rim of your pot. I just did a brew like this yesterday and it worked fine.

    Brewsmith cooling shrinkage with BIAB

The recipe has a spot for 'Pct Cooling Loss' and the tooltip says 'Percent of volume lost due to shrinkage' -- I don't think this is the same thing you are referring to.

    Brewsmith cooling shrinkage with BIAB

Crap. I'd been searching for answers to this very question and the last few Beersmith questions were in the AG board. Would a friendly mod relocate this? Thx! :o I'm going to guess that the cooling shrinkage percentage is assuming you're adding already-heated water. Here's hoping...

    Brewsmith cooling shrinkage with BIAB

I have a question regarding the cooling shrinkage calculation when dealing with a BIAB type setup. I do a no-sparge style BIAB and fill my kettle with the full volume right out of the gate. This is cold water, which I then heat to strike temperature, add my bag and dough in. It seems to...
