I currently have a Sanyo mini fridge that I converted to a kegerator and I plan to put it into a bar that I'm installing in our basement. If the Sanyo ever dies and I need a replacement, I want to make sure I can put in a new commercial kegerator like one sold by Danby or Haier.
I am...
I lost 10gal of good beer because of an infection because I was too lazy to properly clean the kegs. A carboy and/or keg cleaner would allow even a lazy person like myself to properly clean.
Busy beer day for me. Brewed 12 gal of BMer's Sterling Gold (was shooting for 11gal, but ended up with an extra gallon). Kegged 10gal of an Amarillo Pale Ale. And I also built a jockey box for Memorial Day next weekend.
For what it's worth, I bought my SQ14 from home depot and the packaging sounds very similar to yours. The box was all beat up and just a few nuts and bolts in the bottom of the box. And I've never seen an SQ14 with a heat shield.
That's definitely not normal. I've used my SQ-14 to bring over 14gal of wort to a boil in MN last January when it was well below zero. If it's not the OPD, make sure you have the air intake adjusted so the flames are all blue with just the tip being orange/yellow.
I got a kenmore 8.8cu ft chest freezer from sears and it fits two 6.5gal carboys or buckets on the floor. If you made a collar you might be able to fit a third.
But I'm guessing in a 5 cu ft freezer there is no way you'd fit more than one carboy. My suggestion is to take two lids from bucket...
It's actually cheaper at Northern Brewer. A 50lb sack of rahr 2-row is $42.95 at midwest and $35.99 at Northern brewer.

I brewed 11gal of Edwort's Ofest today. Ended up with a little over 11gal and overshot my OG (ended up at 1.074), so it looks like this one should come in close to 8% ABV. Overall a good brew day and I also cleaned up the garage (so SWMBO couldn't complain about how long it took to brew :) ).
