It seems that 2 sensors would give the optimal measurement. As long as you can calibrate the sensors so you know how far apart they are in the column then the actual height shouldn't matter as long as both sensors are covered.

hmmm.... when I priced it out it was closer to $80. I guess that's the difference between eBay and Home Depot.

any idea if this would make a good RIMS tube? it's 15" long and has 1/2" inlet/outlet. I'm not sure of the element opening and I think there's a quartz sleeve that I need to remove but it seems like a decent deal for $65...

This is what I was getting at. I think that moving past "insrumentation" where we have remote display for temperature we start to come into automation with something as simple a pid controlled heating element for any one part of the process. And just like there is BIAB, stove top...
