any idea if this would make a good RIMS tube? it's 15" long and has 1/2" inlet/outlet. I'm not sure of the element opening and I think there's a quartz sleeve that I need to remove but it seems like a decent deal for $65.

I'm all for alternative methods but how is that cheaper or better than just using stainless pipe and a couple Tees? The pipes and fittings would cost like $30-40 to buy new on ebay thats what I used myself along with a long stainless cartridge heater. you can then add camlock fittings for easy disassembly and cleaning.

hmmm.... when I priced it out it was closer to $80. I guess that's the difference between eBay and Home Depot.

Yeah... The home depot doesnt even stock stainless pipe and fittings needed useless something changed since Ive been there.

The Tees are $6.50 each so $13 for the pair...

You would be looking at about $22 shipped for an 18" long piece of 1" stainless nipple/pipe..

Use a RIMS tube for a RIMS tube!

I thought most of the triclamp rims tube kits are made of off the shelf sanitary fittings for things like the dairy industry. Which are just offset tees similiar to this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/STAINLESS-STEEL-2-OFFSET-SANITARY-TEE-11-LENGTH-/281914676949
or

Which is also why they are usually 20" long when most home brewers use much shorter elements it seems.

I bet if someone looked hard enough they could find all the identical hardware for about 30-50% of the cost associated with the "kits" and I bet thats exactly what some of the folks who sell the "rims kits" have done...
Still something like $125 isnt a lot to spend to let someone else do the searching and grunt work I guess...

I looked at hot tube heating exchanger tubes myself before I just went with stainless pipe for the ability to have it grow as my system did... and now that my rims tube is about 40" long I'm glade I did since it heats to the desired temp in one pass gently without issues using a very ulwd element and longer contact time on each pass...

2" by 40" is over half a gallon of wort!
